Driven by unprecedented demand, the global mining industry keeps growing - and so is resistance to the inequalities embedded in it. But while race and class have been widely acknowledged as key factors, the importance of gender in the resistance to mining has been largely overlooked.
This unique book provides a corrective to this oversight in uncovering the dynamic intersections between industrial mining, resistance and gender. Drawing on case studies from Australia, Canada and South Africa, the authors identify gender as central to the possibilities of 'speaking back' to a powerful and highly masculinised minerals industry. While showing how more and more women negatively affected by mining organize with new forms of digital activism, this insightful book also explores the complexities 'pro-mining' agendas among women.
In examining resistance as performed in and by local communities and in transnational NGO practice, Barbara Pini and Robyn Mayes offer a sustained, cohesive analysis of global contemporary resistance to mining.
