Do you sometimes look around your office and think the zombie apocalypse has already happened? If so, you need some expert advice, and who better to provide it than those veteran apocalypse survivors Rick Grimes and his group?
Six seasons of hit TV show The Walking Dead have thrilled us with adrenaline-infused, gory entertainment, but it hardly seems the logical place to turn to for advice about one's career. Look a little closer though and you'll find it is full of examples of how (and how not) to manage your team, present your ideas and advance your personal goals. In Working With The Walking Dead you will learn:
* How to identify walkers in the workplace and avoid becoming one;
* Whether Daryl would agree that nice guys finish last;
* Why Rick should make an effort to maintain work-life balance;
* What Michonne, Carol and Deanna can teach us about making it in a man's world;
* How to defeat rivals - even when they are psychos like The Governor.
If you have ever wondered whether you have what it takes to come out on top in a tough environment this book could be the making of you.

Introduction
Previously on The Walking Dead
1. Zombie identification for beginners
A handy guide to help you identify the walkers in your workplace and make sure you're not displaying any signs of zombiedom yourself.
2. What's wrong with being a walker?
Sometimes it seems that joining the ranks of the undead would be far easier than soldiering on: when you're working hard on your career hours after your colleagues have left, you might wonder if it wouldn't be easier to join the undead of your workplace.
3. Getting the job
From Rick's three questions to the Alexandria entry interviews what can we learn from the series when it comes to the way we present ourselves to recruiters?
4. Making them agree to your plans
If you want to build your career you're going to have to learn the subtle art of getting people to agree to your plans. Follow Rick's example and show people how to make the decision you want.
5. The golden rule
Deanna treated her townsfolk with respect whereas The Governor tried to dictate his will through fear. Your team will work best if you treat them like individuals, and not just as minions to carry out your whims.
6. Work-life balance
The constant stress the survivors are under gives us a good opportunity to see what kinds of things you can expect to go wrong if you constantly place yourself under pressure.
7. Useful work versus useless toil
For many of the survivors the apocalypse has proved to be an opportunity. What can their experiences teach you when it comes to turning your work into a meaningful career rather than something you do every day simply because you have to?
8. Decide where your loyalties lie
In the series groups are very careful about who they allow to join but mistakes are still made and somebody finds themselves having to work in an environment which they do not fit into well. It illustrates the importance of finding a workplace that fits your approach to success.
9. Risk vs reward
Alexandria seems like a dream come true, but Rick quickly becomes restless within its safe confines. The career that suits one person may be drudgery or too high risk for another so know which type you are and chose your career path wisely.
10. Building your team
If you want people to perform well for you it might be helpful to take a crash course in team dynamics - something that The Walking Dead helpfully provides right from the start.
11. Nice guys finish last
Beth believes there are no good people left, since they all died. On the other hand plenty of ruthless individuals such as the Governor and the people-eaters of Terminus are also deceased. So is bloody mindedness really a crucial attribute when it comes to getting to the top?
12. You're not the only one
When you're trying to further your career it is relatively easy to overcome problems caused by the walkers among your co-workers; it's the other career-minded individuals you need to be wary of.
13. When you're going through hell ...
Rick's hope reaches its lowest ebb when the prison is destroyed and he believes Judith is dead, but he bounces back. How can you keep going when your dreams seem to be out of reach?
14. That bloody glass ceiling
The Walking Dead has been accused of not being an equal-opportunities television experience. What can you do about it when your career-building efforts are frustrated by working for an organization where your face doesn't quite fit the template?
15. What makes a great leader?
We see many examples of leadership in The Walking Dead. They all had their different ways of managing teams but with the exceptions of Rick they are all dead. Could a different approach to leadership have kept them alive?
16. The individual versus the team
Carter's opposition to Rick's quarry walkers plan could have put the whole project in jeopardy. When an individual within the team threatens cohesion you need to decide between that person and the team.
17. Think strategically
Most of the action in The Walking Dead centres around short-term plans designed to cope with current threats. But what about afterwards? If a world exists beyond the apocalypse what might it look like?
18. Take responsibility
When Andrea's attempts to negotiate a truce between The Governor and Rick's crew fail she ends up tied to a chair, locked in a room with a zombified Milton. She blames nobody but herself. Here's why it's better to shoulder the responsibility than make excuses.
19. Be adaptable
The residents of Alexandria have tried to pretend it's business as usual, but sooner or later the world beyond the fence will force its way in and they'll be too weak to fight back. If you assume everything will just carry on as it always has you're going to get left behind when the world changes.
20. Get a mentor
Morgan is swayed from the path of violence by Eastman and his Aikido cure. A mentor can help you navigate your career path by teaching you things about your role that you won't find in the company handbook or any management training session.
21. Standing out from the crowd
What differentiates the characters who have survived from season 1 from those who've fallen by the wayside? If you want to get noticed you're going to have to do things that make you stand out from the crowd - in the right way.
22. Make things happen
The quarry full of walkers presents a threat to Alexandria so Rick suggests a daring plan that involves freeing the walkers and guiding them away from the town. If you want to rise through the ranks quickly you have to take control of events and create opportunities yourself.
23. Make more mistakes
Had it not been for Bad-Ass Carol the decision to take the promise of Terminus at its word might have been the last mistake any of the survivors made. Most mistakes are not fatal. So get over it: analyze what went wrong and keep that wisdom with you for future reference.
24. Don't ask permission
Knowing her fellow survivors may not approve Carol takes it upon herself to kill Karen and David to stop the spread of the virus at the prison. Sometimes the only way to get things done your way is to go ahead and do them.
25. The new world's gonna need [your name here]
Without trying to Rick Grimes has created a formidable reputation for himself, so how can you emulate him and become the person everybody wants to have on their team?
