The problem of boys’ underachievement is an issue across the entire developed world and has presented teachers and early years practitioners with challenges as well as opportunities. Only in Scandinavia do boys achieve at roughly the same rate as girls and there they don’t start school formally until they are seven.

The underachievement of boys continues to be high on the government agenda. For many boys in this country and elsewhere, the demands made upon them in the Early Years to read and write, before they are emotionally and physically ready to do so, can give many an early taste of failure from which many of them never fully recover. This book will address the issues that impact on achievement.

Gary Wilson is a freelance consultant and author, and chair of the National Education Breakthrough Programme on Raising Boys' Achievement in the UK. He has advised and trained in over two hundred schools across the UK. He has appeared on Teachers' TV and Radio 4 several times. Gary has previously published 3 books with Bloomsbury - Breaking through barriers to boys' achievement, Help your boys succeed, and Pocket PAL: Raising boys' achievement. Linda Tallent was for many years an early years teacher. In recent years she has worked as a local authority school improvement officer. Linda is a director of LTC, a training company that provides support and advice to primary schools www.learningandtraining.co.uk. She works as an independent educational consultant providing advice, support and training locally, nationally and internationally to teachers, senior managers and local authority officers. She holds a Master’s degree in Early Education and Care from the University of Northumbria.
