Behaviour management in the classroom and schoolyard is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching. This text offers an overview of the major theories of behaviour management for primary and secondary schools, illustrated with detailed case studies. The theories covered range from teacher-dominated methods to more democratic approaches. They include assertive discipline, applied behaviour analysis, the new cognitive behavioural approaches, neo-Adlerian theory, humanism, Glasser's control theory and systems theory. Porter outlines how teachers can develop a personal approach to classroom management based on a solid understanding of theory. The emphasis is on proactive approaches to discipline which allow teachers to achieve their educational and social goals for their students and themselves. Porter also shows how to enhance students' motivation and help students become confident and independent learners. This second edition has been revised and updated and includes new material on working with parents, ethical issues and helpin students to be autonomous in their learning and behaviour.

Louise Porter is a child and clinical psychologist with many years experience of working with children. She lectures in the School of Special Education and Disability Studies at Flinders University of South Australia and is author of Gifted Young Children and Young Children' s Behaviour.
