Their ability to deal with the difficulties of governmental and party leadership in a male-dominated culture are discussed along with an evaluation of their performance in managing domestic problems and handling the issues of war and peace. The essential question asked throughout is what difference being female made in their governing style.

JANE JENSEN received her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois. Her publications include articles on human rights, teaching international studies and on South Asian politics. She has served as book review editor for the International Development Review.
