This study of credit relations in Nepal discerns the culturally varying potentialities of credit relations and related forms of cooperation by means of substantivist research perspective. The analysis concentrates on the cultural-historical development of credit relations and on case studies disclosing differing notions and practices of credit relations among three representatively chosen ethnic communities in Nepal, the Nepalese Hindu castes, the Newars and the Sherpas. By offering a comparative outline, the study also intends to propose a minimal programme for research on culturally embedded credit relations.
