Elaine writes for anyone tired of fundraising appeals or looking to have more impact with their charitable giving dollar, using engaging dialogue to demonstrate charitable giving strategies available to Canadians today. As a Financial Planner, she is able to guide the reader through the maze of strategies and the tax and estate implications of each, to show how Canadians can achieve dramatic value for their charitable dollar. The story centres on Allison, 54, who has just nursed her mom through the final stages of cancer and is now considering the meaning of life and what legacy she might leave. Attending a class reunion, she joins long-time friends - all of whom share a desire to make an impact. They address Allison's concerns about life's struggles and successes, and give her ideas and alternatives to make a difference through charitable giving and volunteering. If you work hard, at home, at the office, or both, it's hard to step out of the rush and think about what's meaningful to you. It's even harder to go the next step and research the financial strategies that may suit the goals that are meaningful to you.Written especially for readers who are not in the business of financial planning or fundraising, industry professionals such as insurance agents, brokers, lawyers, accountants, financial planners and professional fundraising executives will also appreciate the book as a resource for the strategies outside of their normal area of expertise or for their clients or potential donors.

When Allison agreed to go to her class reunion, she was not expecting it to be any fun. Cynthia had talked her into it. As always. Since the day Cynthia had talked Allison into joining her on stage for the residence talent show dressed up as the Beatles, Allison had been one of the 'Fab Four.' Whenever Allison wanted to stay home and study, Cynthia helped her get out and be sociable. When Allison broke up with Alan, her boyfriend, and he wouldn't take no for an answer, Cynthia had been there for her. When she'd gone through her divorce, Cynthia had taken her shopping for a new look. When her son moved across the country for a job in Alberta, Cynthia helped her plan a holiday. And when Allison went through the hot flashes of her change of life, Cynthia was there to listen to her complaints. This weekend when Allison wanted to stay home and mope, Cynthia thought the reunion was just the medicine Allison needed. 'You've sacrificed yourself for long enough!' Cynthia said. 'This is going to be fun!' Sure, maybe nursing her mom for the past eight months had taken its toll on Allison's health. And yes, maybe it was a sacrifice to have taken a leave of absence from work. She was a divorced single parent, so it was hardly the smartest financial move. But what choice had she had? Her dad was long gone, and Allison was an only child. How could she turn away from the one who raised her? In the past few months, Allison had met many peoplewho sacrificed more than she had to take care of their aging parents. Some of them were hospice workers from the visiting volunteer program, they'd cared for her mom whenAllison took a break. Some of them had quit jobs to be withfamily. The Board of Education had agreed to give Allison aleave of absence, so she could go back to teaching when shewas ready. And in two more years, she'd have a full pension. Allison wouldn't have traded the past few months for anything. She was glad she had been with her mom to give a drink of water or ice chips, to drive her to chemo treatments, to admire the new wigs and makeup her mother received, to take her mom to the lake so they could watch the sunset together. But since her mom's funeral, Allison had been reluctant to get back into the real world. She felt lost. At least Cynthia was with her at this reunion. If she was lucky, Cynthia would do the talking. First up, the golf game. That would be all right. She wouldn't have to talk during golf. In fact, it was usually better if she didn't! And golf was something she was comfortable with. She'd been a member at a local club for several years and could usually shoot under a hundred. She had even won prizes at a couple of tournaments Cynthia had organized. 'Hey, Allison, haven't seen you around the club lately! Guess that means we can beat the pants off you today!' It was Mike, Cynthia's husband. Cynthia and Mike had been high school sweethearts, and Mike ran his own construction company. 'Sure, all you do is play golf - don't you have a business to run?' Allison joked. 'Nah, I just manage it now - get other guys to sweat with a hammer. I've got to make time for the important things!' Allison wondered what the important things were. Did he mean golf? Or family time? What could be more important than work? Were his parents sick? Allison felt as if she had been put in her place. Mike seemed to have it all together. 'All right then, let the game begin!' Allison took out her driver and loosened up with a practice swing. These days, she had to stretch before playing. It felt great to be out on the greens again. Jim was up first. Mike's best friend was an insurance advisor and got out golfing a fair bit.
