There are 2.4 million Filipino Americans, projected to become the largest Asian-American population in the latest census. Filipinos have a unique culturaly, religious, and historical background and, as a result, have mental health needs that differ significantly from other Asian American groups. Beginning with a short history of the Filipino American experience, the book then discusses identity development, values, and Filipino-American communities. The author offers strategies for more effective clinical work with Filipino Americans in a variety of settings. With a Foreword by Derald Wing Sue, this book provides mental health professionals the knowledge, awareness, and skills to become effective and culturally competent when working with their Filipino American clients.

Kevin L. Nadal is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice where he also serves as the Deputy Director of the Forensic Mental Health Counseling graduate program. Dr. Nadal's research has focused primarily on multicultural issues in psychology, including impacts of racial discrimination and racial/ethnic/sexual identity development on mental health.
