The guided discussions in this book are proven ways to reach out to young people and address their social and emotional needs. Teens gain self-awareness and self-esteem, practice problem solving and goal setting, feel more in control of their lives, and learn that they have much in common with one another—they are not alone. Background materials help group leaders feel prepared and secure in their role. Sessions can be easily customized to meet the needs of your group. Digital content includes reproducible handouts from the book.
Jean Sunde Peterson, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Purdue University, where she is director of school counselor preparation and focuses most of her research on the social and emotional development of high-ability young people. In addition to those areas, her workshops and conference keynotes and presentations address academic underachievement, prevention - and development-oriented group work with children and adolescents, bullying, and listening skills for teachers and parents. A licensed mental heath counselor, she also continues to be involved in clinical work with children and adolescents. Dr. Peterson has authored more than 80 books, invited chapters, and journal articles and has received seven national awards for scholarship as well as numerous awards at Purdue for her teaching, research, and service. She lives in Lafayette, Indiana.
