The need for training in school management is now widely recognized. Recent legislation has produced a new agenda for change, including teachers' conditions of service, appraisal, a national curriculum, assessment and testing. The term "local management of schools" embraces the many changes necessary in the way schools run, and a greatly expanded training programme in school management is necessary to cope with it. This package is designed to meet the needs of department heads and co-ordinators who must instruct teachers in new management techniques. The text contains a series of papers written by teachers and lecturers which elucidate time and classroom management, career appraisals, special needs, stress and the teaching environment and many other management issues.
Part 1 You and your work: time management, Shirley Wright; teachers and stress, Mary Heller. Part 2 Relating to others: working with others, Lois Benyon; self-awareness - making and refusing requests, David Kearney; team roles, Tony Beck and Maria Heywood; leadership style, John Buckley; resolving conflict, Jack Schofield. Part 3 Teachers' careers: a self-development plan, John Buckley; career development and counselling, Jack Schofield; teacher appraisal, Ted Wragg.
