Learning Disabilities (LDs) are a group of neurobehavioral conditions characterized by academic difficulties with reading (dyslexia), mathematics (dyscalculia), or writing (dysgraphia), which occur in the absence of mental retardation or a primary emotional abnormality, and despite adequate teaching. Although social, environmental, and cultural factors play an important role in academic success, it has become evident that biological factors in the form of developmental brain abnormalities and a genetic predisposition significantly contribute to the pathophysiology of LD.

This volume critically reviews and assesses recent research studies of LD. It then explains how knowledge of the biological bases of LD can help the clinician diagnose and treat patients with LD. Throughout, there is reference to the range of new investigative tools that advances in neuroimaging have provided.
