Wendell John Coats, Jr. is Professor of Government at Connecticut College where he teaches ancient and modern political theory. He has also taught political theory and foreign/ defense policy at Kenyon College and the University of Colorado. He is the author of six previous books in political theory and politics, including A Theory of Republican Character (1994), Statesmanship (1995), Oakeshott and His Contemporaries (2001), and Political Theory and Practice (2003). In 1979 he worked as a legislative assistant in The U.S. House of Representatives and from 1969 to 1972 served as a company grade U.S. Army officer.
