Working with School-Age Children examines the role of adults in children’s lives outside of the classroom.  It offers guidance for adult staff as they interact with children during out-of-school time.

Building on a foundation of child development theory, the author explores the importance of quality and the characteristics of effective programs and individuals who can best meet children’s needs.  The text contains strategies for adult involvement, healthy and productive activities, and guidelines for developing and sustaining afterschool programs.

School-age program staff and afterschool teachers will find this book a valuable resource for becoming involved in children’s lives outside of school, and for providing the best possible environments for children.

Marlene Bumgarner is a professor of child development at Gavilan College in Gilroy, California. The mother of four children who attended afterschool programs, she developed college courses and a Certificate of Completion for afterschool staff, and has been on both sides of the profession for several decades. In 1997 she founded the Gavilan Hills chapter of the California School Age Consortium, a networking group for afterschool professionals. Dr. Bumgarner also served on the governing board of the state organization (CalSAC) and as a consultant to afterschool programs in several states, including Queensland, Australia. She has written several journal articles about afterschool programs and school-age children, and served as an National Afterschool Association accreditation endorser from 2003 until 2009.  She is a strong advocate of continuous program quality improvement in school-age programs, and a frequent conference speaker.
