Intended for teachers working with children and young people who have parents or carers in prison, this publication provides information on the way in which having a parent or carer in prison can impact on children in the classroom.
It is estimated that over 125,000 children have a parent or carer in prison. For many children, especially young ones, their teacher is the most important perosn to them outside of the home. This text is designed to help teachers deal confidentialy and sensitively with this group, and with the emotional, psychological and practical effects that these children may experience. This new resource draws on the experience of Save the Children and other voluntary organizations working with children of prisoners and their families. It also includes the views of 50 teachers from around the country and of parents and carers, and it gives a voice to children who have visited a parent in prison. It aims to provide: a greater understanding of the criminal justice system and its impact on the children of prisoners; models for good practice, especially around issues of confidentiality; advice on contact and communication with the carer; details of the practical support that is available; ideas for constructing greater awareness and whole-school approach; and details of useful organization, materials and further reading.
It contains an A4 poster along with case studies of actual classroom experiences with children and young people of all ages. The handbook should be of use as a quick reference and for use in training sessions.
