The Journal of Peter Gordon, 1732–1735, provides a rare first-hand account of one of the original Georgia colonists. In his journal, Gordon, who served as chief bailiff of Savannah, Georgia, documents the challenges faced by the original settlers, criticism of the Trustees’ policies for the colony, and interactions with indigenous peoples. His journal provides unique insight into the establishment of one of America’s oldest colonies.

E. MERTON COULTER (1890-1981) was an American historian and writer of the South, American Civil War, and Reconstruction, publishing twenty-six books on the subjects. He was a founding member of the Southern Historical Association. For forty years, he was a professor at the University of Georgia, where he was chair of the Department of History for eighteen years; for fifty years, he was editor of the Georgia Historical Quarterly.
JULIE ANNE SWEET is a professor of history at Baylor University. She is author of William Stephens: Georgia’s Forgotten Founder and Negotiating for Georgia: British-Creek Relations in the Trustee Era, 1733–1752.
