This collection of memoirs describes the lives and science behind some of the people who have advanced our understanding of the conditions for life on Earth and in the universe. The diversity of topics, perspectives, career stages, and career paths makes this an appealing read for those interested in learning more astrobiology.
The book will provide a historical perspective about the lives – not just the science – of the scientists who worked in the fields of study that formed the foundation of our current work to understand the conditions for life in the universe. Astrobiology became a mainstream topic with the announcement in 1996 that fossilized life had been found in martian meteorite ALH84001; that claim has since been discredited. Nonetheless, it followed the 1992 announcement of the discovery of planets orbiting around a pulsar and reinvigorated investigations and debate about conditions required for the origin(s) of life on Earth (partly based on Stanley Miller’s work in 1952) and the possibility of life beyond Earth. The book will also include memoirs of current scientists at all career stages who are actively investigating conditions and requirements for the origin, sustainability, and habitability of life on Earth, and the possibility of life on Mars and exoplanets. The diversity of topics, perspectives, career stages, and career paths and placements provided by the authors themselves will be an appealing read for people who are interested in learning more about the multifaceted field of astrobiology.

Dr. Nicolle Zellner is a professor of physics at Albion College in Albion, MI, where she teaches introductory and advanced astronomy and physics courses and has mentored dozens of student research partners. She has also served as a NASA Program Scientist in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters. Supported by the NSF and NASA, Dr. Zellner’s research interests focus on understanding the impact history of the Earth-Moon system and how those impacts affected the conditions for life on Earth. She studies lunar impact glasses to interpret the bombardment history of the Moon (and Earth), and a second project focuses on understanding how the chemistry of simple molecules is affected by impacts. As a woman in science, she advocates for inclusive approaches and practices to increase diversity (in all of its forms) in the sciences.
