As a reminder, the top and bottom Japanese texts are identical in meaning. The top version is only in hiragana and includes spaces between words. The bottom version has no spaces and uses kanji with furigana.
Unless you are just practicing hiragana recognition, try to work through both versions to improve reading speed, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, kanji, and grammar. If you don’t feel confident in your understanding, review the English translation at the end.

にがつ みっか は せつぶん です。せつぶん に は、まめまき を します。
- 2に月がつ3みっ日か nigatsu mikka―February 3 [2に月がつ (February) + 3みっ日か (3rd day of the month)]
- は wa―(indicates the sentence topic)
- 節分せつぶん setsubun―last day of winter in the traditional Japanese calendar (usually February 3 or 4), day of the bean scattering ceremony; the close of winter; setsubun
- です desu―be; is
- 節分せつぶんには setsubun ni wa―on Setsubun [節分せつぶん (setsubun; the close of winter) + に (on; in; specifies time) + は (adds emphasis)]
- 豆まめまきをします mamemaki o shimasu―throw beans; scatter roasted soybeans to drive demons away
2に月がつ3みっ日かは節分せつぶんです。節分せつぶんには、豆まめまきをします。
