Western painting came of age in the 1300s, but because it has travelled such a long and winding road through the years, it is difficult to know when exactly it began. Divided into four main parts, this is a reference work on European and American painting.
Western painting came of age in the 1300s, but because it has travelled such a long and winding road through the years, it is difficult to know when exactly European and American painting began. Western painting did have many influences, including Greek wall and vase painting, and Roman, Byzantine and Etruscan painting. Painters also borrowed from their teachers, took inspiration from the times and places in which they lived, and came up with their own styles. This reference work on European and American painting is divided into four main parts. Part One is a history of Western painting by country, and it is further divided into sections on the art of Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Americas. Part Two presents information on styles, periods and schools of art. Part Three is a glossary of painting and material terms. Part Four is a biographical dictionary of artists, and it is further divided into dictionaries of artists, artists' nicknames and the families of painters.
