The "Multimedia Encyclopedia of Mammalian Biology" was first published in September 1992. Offering a learning and research environment, it incorporates text, still images, sound and movie, with new software to enable the user to seach, browse, compare and study a range of material. The encyclopedia was developed with the advice of an international scientific editorial board. This network CD-ROM (for up to 50 users) includes: all five volumes of Grzimek's "Encyclopedia of Mammals"; a full screen, full motion video, taken from the BBC natural history archives; a bibliography of scientific literature on mammalogy; a full glossary of terms and an index to scientific and technical terms; and thousands of still images from professional sources. Flexible and instant cross-reference, searching of word, sound and image and hypothesis testing are all possible using powerful hypermedia tools. The encyclopaedia's information management systems supports hypertext and Windows software, allowing easy access to the information by species, geography or biological concept.
Cross referencing is achieved using an intelligent navigation and retrieval system based on a concept classification system developed by the BBC. Minimum specifications to run this CD-ROM are: 386 SX, 4MB RAM, SVGA monitor, CD-ROM drive, Windows compatible sound card and speakers.
