The genus Eucalytus comprises about 750 species found in all states of Australia and some islands to the north, eucalypts occupy most Australian environments and are the basis of huge commercial forest industries in Australia and other countries. Traditionally eucalypts have been difficult to identify but now with even a minimum amount of plant material and instructive illustrations, the task has been made much simpler. EUCLID is a computer-based interactive indentification system for eucalypts. It has been produced by the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research and is developed from the Australian National Herbarium database of over 60,000 specimens plus information derived from glasshouse studies for details of comparative juvenile plant morphology and from widespread field observations. Features include the ability to compare different species using on-screen images. Detail includes natural distribution, habit, bark, flower buds, fruits, seeds and juvenile leaves for 325 species and subspecies.
