Written for pupils who are working at Level 5 or above (Level E in Scotland), "Maths Chest 8" provides practically-based activities. This teacher's file lists all the resources required for each activity - saving valuable preparation time for the busy classroom teacher.
The "Maths Chest" series enables teachers to teach mathematics in a way which will meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, the Northern Ireland Curriculum and the 5-14 Mathematics Guidelines. Consisting of eight comprehensively resourced "Maths Chests", the scheme provides a detailed and supportive scheme of work. Other features of the series are: written by teachers, for teachers, to support primary school "good practice"; provides a series of spirally structured teacher's files for the teacher to plan lessons to meet a realistic variety of needs; caters for differing levels of achievement through built-in enrichment and reinforcement material; describes and resources classroom activities - both teacher-led and teacher-independent; is packed in plastic crates for easy storage; and offers support for individual and class teaching. Written for pupils who are working at Level 5 or above (Level E in Scotland), "Maths Chest 8" provides practically-based activities presented in the tried-and-tested form of the "Maths Chest" series.
The authors have recognized the potential need for additional support for non-specialist teachers who have pupils working at this level and this has been built into the teacher's file. This teacher's file: lists all the resources required for each activity - saving valuable preparation time for the busy classroom teacher; fully describes all pupil activities with specific examples to help teachers organize work within the classroom; suggests how to adapt some of the activities to accommodate different ability levels; details how work in other areas can be linked with mathematical concepts; includes reference to songs, stories and rhymes which can be used to support a lesson; and includes reinforcement and enrichment actitivies.
The consistent structure and development of each topic is covered on each page by: the topic - each topic is presented as a discrete unit, and is identified by a title and a number (the number appears on each item of pupil material connected with the topic); overview - an overview of the content and aims of each topic is provided; resources - materials provided by the scheme are clearly referenced, as well as other materials which are needed; structure - an overview of all the activities which are included in the topic are referenced to three categories - teacher activities, group activities and individual activities; teacher activities - describes each activity in the structure (included are teaching and assessment points); group activities - teachers can readily plan their work by choosing appropriate activities for their different groups of children, and see immediately the resources they will need to implement their choices; and cross-curricular links - each topic has a special section which suggests ways of developing maths across the curriculum.
