Part of a programme which helps students achieve greater competence in problem solving and inductive reasoning. Increasingly-complex problems are provided for each basic type of information processing procedure. The programme is devoted to the application of the procedures to practical situations.
This is the manual which forms part of a practical programme designed to help children and adolescents achieve greater competence in problem solving and inductive reasoning. Careful studies in both Germany and the USA have shown measurable increases in analytical reasoning skills after use of this programme. This training can be used in a one-to-one context, in small groups or for entire classrooms of students at once, using colour overhead versions of the training materials. Particular success has been achieved by teachers and school psychologists working with gifted students, as well as those with clinical and learning disabilities. Recent clinical uses of the programme with hyperactive and attention deficit disorder have also shown positive effects. In addition, many teachers and counselors appreciate the use of this programme as a screening activity, in the context of "outcome based learning" environments. The system consists of 120 carefully developed "problems", presented via full-colour and durable plates.
20 inductive reasoning problems are provided for each of the six basic types of information processing procedures: generalization; discrimnation; cross classification; recognizing relationships; discriminating relationships; and systems construction. For each type of process, the complexity of the problems presented increases systematically. In the initial lessons concrete objects and picture-oriented problems are utilized. During the middle lessons, a greater portion of the problems depicting daily life are employed, and the last two lessons are dominated by problems in which only symbols occur. A major portion of the programme is devoted to helping the child transfer these basic inductive reasoning procedures to practical situations. A free introductory video is available. Assessment booklets and a package comprizing the full test and this manual are also available.
