Co-developed by Dr. Jon Carlson (creator of the highly successful and award-winning video series Psychotherapy with the Experts and Family Therapy with the Experts) and Dr. Judy Lewis (2000-2001 President of the American Counseling Association), this video series fills an important need in the field of addiction counseling. As you know, the advent of managed care has replaced traditional long-term care with brief intervention, and a dependence on lock-step treatment has given way to individualization. These transformations in addiction treatment have created a hunger for the immediate training of providers in every setting. This video series was specifically designed to meet this need - to provide counselors and therapists at all levels with the training necessary to meet the demands of today's changing practice. Each instructional tape features footage from an actual counseling session featuring real clients facilitated by an expert in the field. Approximately 90 minutes in length, each video follows a three-part format of instruction, demonstration, and follow-up discussion. Dr.Zweben's approach to therapy proceeds under the assumption that therapy and self-help groups have complementary roles in the process of recovery.
In this video, Dr. Zweben focuses on the role of "12-step" self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. In this tape, Dr. Zweben works with a Desert Storm veteran who is currently drinking and who is considering the possibility of contacting Alcoholics Anonymous.
