This work offers health professionals with the essential Spanish required to communicate with and treat Spanish-speaking patients. The text presents Spanish translations of the terms, phrases and questions that may be used in ascertaining the patients history, performing the physical examination, giving the patient instructions and providing general treatment and follow-up care. Topics include contraception, pregnancy and delivery, poisoning and AIDS, with patient instructions given in each instance. It is written so that all the questions can be answered with simple "yes" or "no" responses and includes an appendix of general vocabulary, an index of terms and an index of verbs. The book assumes no prior knowledge of Spanish, but aims to teach what is needed to communicate quickly, comfortably and effectively.

Gail L. Bongiovanni, MD, is in private practice in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Bongiovanni has an undergraduate degree from Smith College; MD from Case Western University; internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital; fellowship in gastroenterology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Served as Director of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at University of Cincinnati. Serves on the medical staffs of Jewish Hospital and Christ Hospital and holds privileges at Bethesda Hospital, Clermont Mercy Hospital, Mercy Anderson Hospital, and Children's Hospital.
