Part of a series of photocopiable teachers' books that aim to meet the need for differentiated teaching resources for use during group time of Literacy Hour. It includes: "crib sheets"; 30 20-minute group activities for word, sentence, or text level tasks and suggestions for daily homework tasks.
"Special Needs Literacy" is a series of photocopiable teachers' books that aims to meet the need for differentiated teaching resources for use during group time of Literacy Hour. It contains: "crib sheets" specially written with non-specialist helpers in mind; 30 20-minute group activities for word, sentence, or text level tasks; reading extracts that cover a range of genre and interest level appropriate for a particular year group; activities pitched at a lower reading level; and suggestions for daily homework tasks. Each book in the series contains: crib sheets (echoing the teacher prompts supplied by the NLS) specially written with non-speicalist helpers in mind; 30 20-minute group activities for word, sentences, or text-level tasks - enough for six weeks of literacy hours; reading extracts that cover a range of genre and interest level appropriate for a particular year group; activities pitched at a lower reading level. For example, texts in the Year 3 book have a range and genre appropriate to Y3 but these are matched with Level 2 activities (for Y4 the Level is 2/3 and for Y5, Level 3).
The target level and framework objectives covered by each book are clearly stated on the cover so that teachers can choose as appropriate for their needs; and suggestions for homework tasks. Fifteen of the 20-minute sessions are supported by three different reading books. The titles chosen are well-known and widely available. The remaining 15 sessions are supported by photocopiable text extracts to ensure appropriate genre cover. The units in this book are based on the following children's books: "Clever Cakes and Other Stories" by Michael Rosen, "Philibert the First and Other Stories", by Dick King Smith, "THe Hobyahs" by Val Biro and on the following photocopiable texts provided in this book: "Party Food" non-fiction; "Air Pressure" (non-fiction); "Earth-worm" by Leonard Clark; "inside the Egg", by Noel Petty; "Orange" by John Cotton; "Pineapple" by John Cotton (poetry).
