Stephenie Meyer may think the 'fame thing'is 'weird,' but as the creator of the TwilightSaga and fictional superstars Bella, Edward, and Jacob, Meyer is something of a rock starherself. In August ????, to launch BreakingDawn, Meyer added a rock-concert element toher book tour, going on the road with JustinFurstenfeld, frontman of one of her favoritebands, Blue October. On each stop, Meyertook to the stage to answer questions from fansand, as the LA Times reported, 'ear-piercingscreams from the crowd punctuat[ed] the night- seriously, after every sentence, throughoutthe whole show' it was 'as if Meyer was aJonas Brother.'Who is the woman behind the story thathas captivated a passionate, obsessed generationof vampire- and werewolf-lovers? Timedescribes Meyer as 'smart, funny, and cheery.'She comes across as calm and thoughtful ininterviews, and, with her long dark hair fallingsoftly around her face, her appearance is sunny. She explains, 'The Goth thing is really notme,' and freely admits, that despite havingpenned a hugely successful supernatural bookseries, 'I'm not really an expert on the subjectof vampires. I haven't read many vampire novels- maybe one, but I don't remember itstitle, and I don't think I have ever seen a vampiremovie.'The premise for Twilight came to Stepheniein a dream - a dream her millions of fans aregrateful she remembered. She explains, 'In mydream . . . I can see a young woman in theembrace of a very handsome young man, in abeautiful meadow surrounded by forest, andsomehow I know that he is a vampire. In thedream there is a powerful attraction betweenthe two. When I started to write this, I had noidea where it was going, I had no idea at all inthe beginning that I was writing a book. Istarted writing out the scene from my dream[which eventually became chapter ??], andwhen I got done I was so interested in thecharacters that I wanted to see what wouldhappen to them next. And so, I just wrote andlet whatever happened happen.' The thoughtnever occurred to her that what she was workingon would eventually be published. 'It wasjust for me, for fun, and I never felt any selfimposedpressure.'At the time, Meyer was ?? years old, andon a typical day had 'a million things to do'as she took care of raising her three youngsons, Gabe, Seth, and Eli. Her creative pursuitswere mostly limited to scrapbooking and makingelaborate Halloween costumes. But themorning after her dream she 'stayed in bed, thinking about the dream. Unwilling, I eventuallygot up and did the immediate necessities, and then put everything that I possibly couldon the back burner and sat down at the computerto write - something I hadn't done inso long that I wondered why I was bothering.'Reading had always been a favorite escapefor Meyer, and even in her early years shedelighted in literature through books andscholarly activity. She was born on ChristmasEve in ???? in Hartford, Connecticut, toStephen and Candy Morgan. The unusualspelling of her name came when her parentsadded an 'ie' to her dad's name, Stephen.Stephenie says that her status as a Christmasbaby has 'always given me a bad attitude tobirthdays in general.' (An attitude she passedon to Bella.)
