This book will support the development of early understandings, skills and attitudes for anyone involved in science education. Drawing on the author’s expertise in primary science and early years education, this book will support students and professionals working with children up to the age of 8.

Emergent Science provides the underpinning theory and pedagogy to develop quality emergent science development in young children and babies. Peppered with engaging and practical ideas of how practitioners can provide quality science experiences for the children they work with, the book also includes:

• case studies exemplifying good practice and tried-and-tested ideas
• reflective tasks for practitioners at any level, from students and early career professionals through to those now leading practice
• contributions from leading experts in emergent science, as well as developing professionals; and
• tools for developing professional, study skills and research skills to Masters level.

This book is ideal students on both Early Years and primary courses, including PGCE and undergraduate routes; students of Education Studies and Early Childhood Studies; and practitioners working in Early Years and primary settings.

Jane Johnston is a Reader in Education at Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln. She coordinates the international emergent science research network and is co-editor of the Journal of Emergent Science and coordinator for the Early Years special interest group of ESERA (European Science Education research Association).
