Dear reader, the global dimension of higher education and research is of increasing importance. As in other parts of the world, universities in Europe are responding to the challenges and opportunities created by internationalisation. The Handbook on the Internationalisation of European Higher Education has been designed to encourage reflection on these ongoing changes, and assess impacts and opportunities for European higher education institutions. As an information and reference tool, it is targeted at all those who are interested and involved in the internationalisation of European higher education and its global standing. It is also designed as an essential guide for university leaders and international officers, as they develop and pursue their own specific institutional internationalisation strategies. There are enormous opportunities to learn from each other, and the purpose of this Handbook is to respond to this growing demand for mutual learning and exchange of good practice. By providing institutions with tools to develop genuine European approaches to international activities, the Handbook is thus also actively contributing to building the European Higher Education and Research Area. Each chapter focuses on a core element of internationalisation, providing an overview and analytical articles, case studies and best practice examples, as a coherent whole. Each article can also be read as a ‘stand alone’ document focused on a specific topic. The first edition you have now received will be complemented every four months by a supplement containing additional articles, developing full coverage on all relevant topics and keeping pace with rapid change.
