It is estimated that up to 90 percent of inmates experience co-occurring disorders. Integrating treatment of mental health and substance abuse can reduce negative outcomes such as rearrest. This module fills that crucial need. This module of A New Direction has a shorter workbook so as not to overwhelm clients. A facilitator's guide is also available.
Created in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Corrections, A New Direction is a comprehensive, cognitive-behavioral treatment curriculum for offenders with substance use disorder. The curriculum is divided into six core modules and a Co-occurring Disorders module. Learn more about A New Direction Complete Collection.
Co-occurring Disorders is designed to be used in conjunction with other A New Direction modules, particularly with Criminal & Addictive Thinking and Drug & Alcohol Education. Offenders with both substance use and mental health disorders will participate in this module. The 152 page participant workbook, written at a sixth-grade level, contains materials that reflect real-life experiences of offenders with addiction and activities that demonstrate addictive and criminal thought processes. Thirty-six exercises cover: What You Are Dealing With, Why Treatment, Dealing with Meds and Treatment, Relapse, and Building a Support System.
