A Personal and Professional Journey Through Endurance Sports and Technology
Endurance sports have been a lifelong passion of mine. From Nordic skiing and orienteering in my youth to competing in triathlons since my first junior race in 1989, I've continuously sought inspiration and challenge. As I write this, I'm preparing to Ironman Texas in April 2025, which will be 18th full Ironman race to start, a testament to my ongoing commitment to the sport.
My professional journey has been equally intertwined with well-being, exercise, and sports. With a degree in Medical Engineering, I have worked at the intersection of health, sports, and digital innovation. My career began at Tampere University Hospital, followed by a role in healthcare consulting at Accenture. For the past decade, I have been with Suunto, dedicated to equipping people with cutting-edge devices and digital tools to support their training and overall well-being.
This blend of personal passion and professional expertise has shaped the perspectives and insights shared in this book, aiming to provide you with practical, science-backed guidance to navigate your own journey in sports and fitness.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of using countless tech devices, both personally and professionally, each marking a step in the evolution of sports technology. My first sports watch was the iconic Timex 8Lap, a true hallmark of triathletes in the 1980s. This legendary device, with over 400,000 units sold, became a symbol of the sport's rise to prominence even making its way to President Bill Clintons wrist during his 1993 inauguration (1.2).

From there, my collection expanded to include some of the most innovative tools of their time: the Polar Edge, Polar PE3000, and Polar Xtrainer, all of which pushed the boundaries of heart rate monitoring and training insights. Then while started to work in Suunto i familiariced myself with  Suunto t3 and t6, which introduced deeper physiological tracking, followed by the groundbreaking Suunto Ambit family, the followed by range of Suuntos Spartan, Suunto 9 baro, Suunto Vertical  and now, my trusted Suunto Race.
Each of these devices tells a story not just about technological advancement, but also about how the tools we use shape the way we train, recover, and perform. From lap tracking to multisport navigation and cutting-edge performance metrics, these watches have been my companions through countless workouts, races, and personal milestones.  
My journey through sports tech has been anything but ordinary. I've explored the world of bike computers with Stages, Hammerhead, Wahoo, and Garmin, while diving into power meters from Quarq, Power2Max, Rotor, Stages, and Powertap to fine-tune every pedal stroke.
Sleep tracking? I've done it all with Beddit, Emfit, and Oura. My soundtrack for training has been powered by Oakley MP3 sunglasses, with waterproof tunes courtesy of Finis and Sony players designed for swimming. Running has been a high-tech adventure too, with sensors from Adidas, Stryd, Runscribe, Runteq, and Nike+, plus Under Armour-connected shoes to round it out.

The tech doesnt stop there. I have tested remote smart displays like Form, Ciye, and Activelook to enhance real-time feedback. I have used EMG pants to measure muscle activation and tracked muscle oxygen with Moxy and Train.red. From smart scales for weight tracking to virtual wind tunnels and aero drag sensors for optimizing cycling aerodynamics, I have left no stone unturned in my pursuit of understanding of technology usage while seeking performance advangement
