As well as being eco-friendly and money-saving, repairing your old clothes is a brilliant way of adding personality to your wardrobe. Perfect for complete beginners, this handbook takes you through a variety of mending techniques and shows you how to make unique projects with your new skills.

First, there is a guide to all the tools you’ll need, from hand-sewing needles to darning discs and mushrooms. Next are the basic sewing skills including straight stitch, how to sew on a button and embroidery stitches.

These are followed by the mending techniques, with a variety of different darning methods as well as patchwork and reverse appliqué. As well as advice on choosing colours, threads and materials, this chapter features photography of each mend as well as easy-to-follow step artworks.

Put your skills into practice with the 20 beautiful projects, which include adding needle-felted embellishments to a scarf, repairing a denim jacket with sashiko and adding colourful darning to a jumper. Finally, you’ll find advice on caring for your clothes so you can wear and enjoy them for years to come.

After training as a couture milliner, Shelley Zetuni set up her own hat-making studio in North London, where she included royalty among her client list. During the pandemic, she found comfort in crafting and drew on her lifetime of textile know-how to launch Sewingsmith. She runs beginners’ visible mending classes and retreats.
