Two passionate perspectives on a football club's season which saw hope and expectation reduced to despair and relegation.
This book was going to be a celebration of the brave new world of Carlisle United, the first full season under new American ownership. Howard Falshaw had already published an account of Carlisle's journey to promotion in 2023, and invited his fellow supporter and friend John Clarke to co-author a new book about the new era of the club. They fully expected to be writing an account of the club's glorious return to winning ways, with significant investment both on and off the pitch.

The reality of the 2024-25 season turned out to be a very different matter. It saw three different coaches tasked to manage the team. It saw a massive turnover of the playing staff. It saw some dismal tactics and performances that ultimately led to the ignominy of a second successive relegation, despite a late rally.

Throughout the decline the authors never questioned their sanity in regularly making the long journey from Wakefield to Carlisle. Nor did they question their belief in the club's ability to recover until it was much too late. instead, they focused on writing their individual perspectives on the travails of their team, and it is their journeys from expectation and optimism to disappointment and despair that are the narrative of this book.

Howard Falshaw saw his first Carlisle United game in 1967, and has now supported the club for fifty-eight years. His retirement in 2022, after forty-one years as an English Teacher, afforded him the opportunity to become a season-ticket holder for the first time, even though this required a 270-mile round trip from Wakefield. He has previously published "From Despair to Delirium", an account of Carlisle's remarkable journey to promotion in the 2022-23 season, and is currently working on a memoir of his many years as a supporter of the club. he has supported Carlisle United for slightly less time than his co-author. John Irving Clarke was born and brought up in Carlisle. With a degree from Leeds University and a P.G.C.E. qualification from St Martin's College, Lancaster he began a career in teaching English which took him to schools in Hertfordshire and Nottinghamshire before three schools in Yorkshire. he followed that with a spell of tutoring adult education creative writing classes both online and face to face. Throughout this time, he built up a publication record for poetry, prose and radio drama. His published novels include "Who the Hell is Ricky Bell?" and "Land of Dreams". He lives with his wife in Wakefield where they plot visits to see their son who lives and works in New York.
