Introduction

What if the limitations and hardships you’re facing right now aren’t roadblocks but invitations? Invitations to rise, to grow, and to become everything you were created to be. This book shows you how I did it and provides the blueprint for how you can do it too!

Let me begin by clarifying what I mean by ascension. In the context of this book, ascension refers to the deliberate and purposeful journey of rising above and beyond your current struggles, hardships, and limitations to reach your highest potential. It’s not about chasing perfection but embracing transformation. True Ascension is a process of becoming shaped by deep self-awareness, intentional mindset shifts, and bold strategic action. It is fueled by faith, strengthened through fortitude, and guided by visionary foresight. This definition is not intended to mirror the theological meaning of ascension, specifically the religious event of Jesus Christ ascending into the heavens. Rather, it symbolizes a personal and internal elevation that is rooted in human potential and the unwavering belief that something greater is always within your reach. Whether you’re navigating deep personal adversity, stepping into a new leadership role, or simply striving for more purpose and momentum in your life, embracing the true-ascension mindset can unlock powerful, lasting transformation. In the chapters ahead, I share my story and offer you the blueprint to unlock your own greatness. Let me start by sharing how it all began.

In my mid-forties, I found myself paralyzed by a series of harrowing events, unable to see a way forward. It began several years earlier with the loss of my older brother, Stu, to cancer. More than just a sibling, Stu was our family’s charismatic and devoted anchor, the vibrant heart holding us together. His passing fractured our family bonds, leaving me feeling completely unmoored from my family, which, in later years, turned into a sense of responsibility to help us heal, reconnect, and restore our bonds.

As I was navigating the depths of personal grief, any remaining sense of safety and peace was ripped away during a home invasion in the middle of the night. What had once been my sanctuary became a place of fear. My greyhound saved my life that night, but something essential was stolen, not just physical security but a soul-level stillness that once grounded me. Outwardly, I often appeared stoic, holding it together with quiet resolve. But internally, I was fractured, carrying a silent weight I could not yet name. It would take years before I realized how much had been taken from me. I tried to fill the void with poor decisions comprising distractions and fleeting comforts, but nothing could restore what had been lost. The trauma deepened when I learned the same intruder went on to murder a student at the university where I worked. Being called to testify at his death penalty trial stirred up even more fears, deepened the anxiety, and illuminated the fragile line between life and death. The man responsible remains on death row to this day.

Amid these overwhelming personal challenges, I felt increasingly confined and unhappy professionally, because my career at the university where I worked had plateaued partly because new leadership had completely changed the culture into one that did not match my values. I was yearning for a new opportunity to contribute, grow, and flourish once again. Though the need for change was undeniable, the path ahead was incredibly murky, obscured by an inability to free myself from pain and confusion, and at times, it felt as though no path forward existed at all. In a profound moment of clarity and desperation, I prayed earnestly, directly asking God for a fresh start and a way out. Miraculously, the very next day, my dad called to share that he had been unable to sleep the night before, sensing that things were not going well for me. God answered my prayers through him, as my dad suggested I return home to Nebraska.

Restarting my life from scratch was not just a logistical decision; it was a spiritual surrender. I felt a deep, unshakable call to honor God’s plan for me, even though it meant letting go of almost everything that had once defined my world. I rented the smallest U-Haul available and barely filled it halfway. I left behind almost everything I had accumulated during the previous twenty years, the reminders of a life that had grown heavy with pain, isolation, and the false sense of safety and success I had clung to for too long. What I carried with me instead were my two little dogs, a few cherished possessions, and my faith, which had been tested but never broken. In that moment, I was not just moving; I was shedding the weight of everything that had kept me stuck, unsafe, and alone. I headed to Nebraska with a heart open to healing, drawn to the closeness of my aging parents and other family members, and anchored in a quiet conviction that this was the beginning of a new, God-aligned, purpose-filled plan.

And just when I thought I had already endured the worst of it, a health crisis emerged that would become both a literal and symbolic test of faith. Less than a year after I made the decision to leave Texas and restart my life in Nebraska, I was suddenly in the hospital for what I thought would be a routine gallbladder removal. But what began as a standard procedure turned into something far more serious. The surgeon discovered my gallbladder was embedded in my liver, requiring a series of painful, drawn-out interventions. I’ll share more about that journey later in the book, but what I can say here is that those long, still weeks of waiting and uncertainty led to spiritual refinement.

In that vulnerable space, dependent, uncomfortable, and unable to force my way forward, I was confronted with the deeper layers of surrender. I realized that moving back to Nebraska was only the beginning of my healing. This moment demanded I fully release the illusion of control and place my trust in something greater. My faith wasn’t just being tested; it was being rebuilt, from the inside out.

This was the moment I stopped looking back and began fully stepping into the future with intention, clarity, and purpose. It was here that I began to shape what would become my life’s guiding framework: True Ascension. Rooted in the pillars of faith, fortitude, and foresight, this mindset is not a response to limitations and painful setbacks, but instead a proactive strategy for growth and success. With faith, I committed to trusting God’s plan even when the path was unclear to me. With fortitude, I resolved to face immediate and future challenges with strength and unwavering resilience. And through foresight, I began to chart a future shaped by a vision of what I wanted it to be, and not by circumstance of what I once thought it had to be. True ascension is not about surviving your past. It is a game plan about how to intentionally rise to the next level and transform every step and stage of your life into meaningful progress and purposeful living.

Individually, faith, fortitude, and foresight each hold transformative power, but together, they create a synergy that is exponentially greater than the sum of their parts. When they are fully integrated, they propel you through adversity, position you to grow, and elevate you to the next level. Their combined forces create unstoppable momentum. This is the essence of true ascension: a dynamic, forward-moving mindset that aligns spiritual conviction, inner strength, and strategic insight into a powerful force for transformation.

Creating, applying, and honing the true-ascension mindset dramatically reshaped my trajectory. Within two years, I earned tenure for the second time in my life. Within five, I advanced to the role of associate dean in my college. And within eight, I became the dean of my alma mater. But perhaps the most profound test of this mindset came in walking alongside my mom during her four-year battle with breast cancer. The pain of ultimately losing her was extremely difficult, but more so was the day-by-day reality of watching her struggle, supporting her through treatments, experiencing fleeting moments of hope, and accepting the inevitable setbacks. It was in those quiet, difficult hours that faith, fortitude, and foresight were not just abstract ideals but my lifelines. My mom’s strength and grace became a mirror for my own growth, and even amid that sorrow, our family found reconciliation, healing, and unity. Today, we look ahead with excitement and gratitude as Stu’s daughter, Keely, just brought a new baby girl into our family, little Landry Renee. These joys and successes are reminders and gifts from God that, even after seasons of deep loss, life renews, legacies continue, and hope rises again.

This book invites you to courageously embrace faith, fortitude, and foresight, unlocking your potential to ascend toward a life of profound purpose, lasting joy, and true greatness.

Faith represents your North Star, a guiding compass along your journey. It keeps you attuned to a higher purpose, providing clarity and direction amid life’s complexities. Faith keeps you safeguarded against feelings of uncertainty and being overwhelmed. When fear and doubt emerge, faith illuminates your path, reaffirming confidence and clarity when you face difficult choices. It reminds you that you are never alone; connecting you to God’s divine plan and encouraging you to trust that each step...
