Mid-Norfolk Railway volunteer Adam Cartwright tells the inspirational story of this railway’s preservation.
The Mid-Norfolk Railway is a distinctive heritage line which runs for nearly 12 miles through the rolling Norfolk countryside between the market towns of Dereham and Wymondham. Deservedly popular with families as well as enthusiasts, the railway offers a range of enticing days out by rail through a well-balanced blend of steam and diesel services.

After passenger services ended in 1969, freight traffic survived for another twenty years. That lifeline meant local people had time to plan a future for the line as a heritage railway, with the support of local councils. However, the way forward was challenging as, at times, rival organisations fought for control. Vandalism and dereliction just added to the preservationists’ problems. A group of railfans overcame all these hurdles and more to preserve the railway. Today, the ongoing issues of life-expired track and structures contribute to a long to-do list for the army of (mostly) volunteers who keep the trains running. The railway also has 6 miles of track and land to the north of Dereham, ending at the rural County School station, and has plans for services to eventually run a full 18 miles end to end.

Richly illustrated and packed with valuable insights, Mid-Norfolk volunteer Adam Cartwright tells the inspirational story of the railway’s preservation.

Adam Cartwright took early retirement from HM Revenue & Customs in 2023 and moved to Lincolnshire, giving him much more time to pursue research and writing about local history, breweries and railways. He also edits a magazine for a heritage railway, volunteers in his local community and is slowly learning Spanish. An MNR member since 1992, Chris Bell retired from the railway infrastructure monitoring industry in 2018 and returned to Norfolk where he soon found himself the Manager of the Heritage and Education Team and the curator of the MNR collection. He also enjoys his vintage model railway, local history and cycling around the quiet lanes of rural East Anglia. John Hull moved to Norfolk in 1974 and immediately got involved with the campaign to retain the railway through Dereham. He played a part in getting the local councils to provide finance for the MNRPT to purchase the line, and was Chairman of the Trust for several years. Retiring form the Trust Council in 2023, he is now an honorary vice president.
