This book discusses the serious consequences of experiences of death and dying, both for the dying and their family members, and the family members' grief work and health after the death of their loved ones. The book will also present a health promotion perspective of palliative care patients, their families, and healthcare workers. All approaches to patients and their families must be based on individual contexts and frameworks and should be adjusted accordingly. The possibility of following up with the bereaved after the death of their loved ones as an important health promotion intervention. The healthcare workers in palliative care are subject to different stressors than other medical professionals, and the priorities are not the same as in other settings; ultimately, fulfilling the patient's wishes as well as their needs is essential.

Beate André is a registered nurse and mental health nurse. Professor André completed her PhD in clinical medicine in 2010, and her research focuses on quality of care, quality of the work environment and implementation of pain measurement in palliative care. Nursing science and health documentation is another main area of interest for her, as well as nursing home care. She has produced numerous scientific publications related to different aspects of nursing, and has promoted several implementation studies in nursing practice, in both community healthcare and specialized healthcare. Gerd Inger Ringdal is a psychologist and professor emerita of health psychology. Her research interests lie in the issues of quality of life, stress, coping, grief, bereavement, social support, and palliative care. She has published articles in: Quality of Life Research, Journal of Psychosocial Oncology, Social Indicators Research, British Journal of Cancer, Palliative and Supportive Care, Palliative Medicine, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Journal of Psychosomatic Research, Journal of Public Health, Journal of Traumatic Stress, Journal of Loss and Trauma, Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, the European Journal of Public Health.
