I have faced a lot of challenges in my life. Some of these challenges have taken a severe toll on my mental health, and the process of working through them took work, resilience, and discipline on my part, but the results were worth it. Any kind of forward motion is good for you, yet to create that forward motion results in steps toward healing and personal growth.

The challenges of life can seem overwhelming, making you stagnant and leaving you feeling stuck in a victim mentality. When a situation triggers pain and fear, I see it as a bad thing to be avoided at all costs. You likely can relate to what I am talking about. Fear and pain were associated with unpleasant changes, and that led me to fear change.

Pain and fear are often associated with bad vibes, but the truth is that they are both just forms of energy that cannot be created or destroyed. It simply changes form, moving throughout our world. Avoiding them meant avoiding energy that was essential for change. Any kind of forward motion is good for you, as it keeps you from staying stuck or stagnant. Fear is such an incredible emotion because it can actually end up being a catalyst for creating meaningful change in your life.

Things will keep happening because life doesn’t stop just when everything in your world is perfect. Instead, life is constantly in motion. Our lives are more like a roller coaster, going up and down due to various forces. That means we all face situations that are beyond our control. What we have control over is how we respond to these situations.

You probably know someone who ends up in the same situation over and over again. It might even be obvious to you what mistakes they are making, but for them, the situation is out of their control. They take a victim mentality, focusing on what is happening to them instead of what they can do in the face of these situations. The result is a focus on what is outside of their control instead of what they are able to accomplish or change.

Being willing to go through an experience and try your best to extract some purpose or meaning from it all is often all that you can do. Things don’t happen to teach you a lesson specifically, but you can choose to take something away from everything that happens to you.

But to truly embrace the change that comes with fear, you have to be ready for it. To prepare for change, you need to understand how to respond to scary situations. No matter what happens, you can’t change things that are outside of your control. Yet, all those life experiences have brought you to where you are today. Your past, including the situations outside of your control and the decisions you made, are the reason you are where you are in life. Painful experiences, whether you experienced them as a child or an adult, gave you the opportunity to develop resilience and strength. Those same experiences gave you the opportunity to discover relationships you value, with people who are good for you and good to you.

Why is this so important for you in the process of personal growth and healing? How you view your past can determine whether you are stuck with regret or able to make peace with it and move forward to create your future. As the “bad times” play a role in molding you, they have also given you skills and mental strength to deal with changes or challenging circumstances.

Accepting that change will happen and deciding how you want to react or respond to your circumstances is the only control you have, but it is powerful. To be prepared for the roller coaster of life, prepare yourself with a “toolbox” of personal growth skills acquired as part of your personal journey. The stronger and more resilient you are, the more in control of your life you will feel, even when the things happening around you are out of your control.

The Importance of Seeking Help

One of the hardest things that everyone faces is being vulnerable enough to ask for help. Society dictates so many roles, responsibilities, and expectations, to the point that you can feel as if you are weak when you admit you cannot handle everything in your life, including your mental health.

For me, therapy has been a game-changer. I have discovered so many things about myself and my ability to navigate challenges in life and relationships. The day you understand that you are not a victim of anything or anyone, you will feel indestructible. In therapy, you learn to change the filters through which you see life. It is incredible to be in the hands of an expert. Who is better than someone who can understand how you feel because they have experienced it themselves? They have also experienced depression. Yes, doctors are humans too.

I admit that when I first made myself vulnerable and went through the process of getting professional help, I thought they were judging me. My response was to make myself look better by hiding things from them. That only delayed me from progressing. Once I realized I could tell them everything without judgment, it was a game-changer for my mental health journey.

Part of that ability to speak without fear of judgment comes from building a level of trust with my therapist. You also have to be willing to step through the fear of being vulnerable to another person, and take a leap of faith. But once I did, I was able to get so much more out of every session.

This therapy also helped me to come to a greater understanding of how debilitating the victim-mentality can be. If you believe you are a victim, you are likely to feel weak, stuck in life, and feel like everything is out of control, thus heightening your fears. But that is no way to go through life!

If you survived or overcame something, you are not a victim, so don’t think of yourself that way. You are a survivor. So, what do survivors do and feel as they face new challenges or the ups and downs of life? First, they feel indestructible and ready to take on challenges. Survivors seek help when they need to talk with someone, accepting that strong people are willing to be vulnerable with others.

As a survivor, you make battle plans to overcome your negative thoughts; you have a plan in place to deal with issues as they come up, giving you a greater sense of control and peace. You also take stock of your resources, including the people in your life. Survivors admit to loved ones that they need help; they share their concerns about depression and suicidal ideation.

It is not easy to admit your fears about wanting to give up on life. But the more you talk about your feelings, the less likely you are to end your life. If you are feeling vulnerable and in crisis, there are suicide prevention lines you can call. You can even walk into an emergency department at your local hospital. Asking for help in the middle of this crisis shows a level of vulnerability but also a great deal of self-love.

Even though your first response to these thoughts might be speaking to close friends and family, which can help you feel supported, you do need to speak with a trained therapist who has experience working with clients who have experienced trauma and suicidal thoughts.

Healthcare professionals can provide another perspective on what you are going through. They can help you understand that the feelings you are dealing with do not make you “crazy,” “unlovable,” or “unworthy.”

I know it’s difficult because you worry that people are going to judge you and think you’re nuts, but mental health is so common today. Prior to COVID, there was a lot of shame associated with mental health issues, but today, it’s out there in the open. There is a LOT less stigma surrounding it. Know that by voicing how you’re feeling, you stand in your truth and power, giving others around you permission to do the same.

Those negative feelings are just feelings, and even though they’re painful as hell and you wouldn’t wish feelings like this on your worst enemy, they do not define you. You will deal with feelings and experiences at any given time in your life, some good and some bad. Surround yourself with people who really understand you. They can help you to get control of how you are feeling and what actions you can take to mitigate the discomfort or create a different outcome.

I don’t want you to hurt yourself. I’m sure, deep down inside, you don’t want to hurt yourself either. Most people experiencing thoughts of suicide just can’t deal with the pain anymore. They want to escape the pain and the suffering; they don’t actually want to die.

Recognize that it takes courage to ask for help, and give yourself credit for doing it. I want to help you to learn how to cope with the pain. I want you to learn tools so that you can move through the pain, get past it, and transform into the next stage of your life.

Time Is Relative

One interesting aspect of time is that it never stops moving. The circumstances we find ourselves in today are not the same ones we will face tomorrow. There is no doubt that time is relative and that when you are suffering, everything seems like an eternity. When you are having a good time, “time flies.”

Yes, I know it is very difficult to ignore the voice or voices that tell you that you can’t, you’re stupid, or you won’t succeed. It is very important to realize that time is relative. Letting go is so wonderful, especially letting go in order to receive. Learning to receive is another thing that most people don’t know how to do. “Let go and trust” are magic words; they are trigger words that I use...
