This text describes the deeply entrenched biological and cultural forces that lead Americans to over-eat and become physically inactive, and outlines creative, innovative and controversial solutions to the problem. The book has three main themes: an expose of a culture that feeds its pets better than its people, that targets poorer people as a market for high-calorie, low-nutrient junk food, and that allows children to be manipulated into eating poor diets through toy giveaways and in-school promotions; a call to action for social and policy change; and a workable plan to improve individual health and that of one's family with recommendations and controversial stances.

Kelly Brownell, Ph.D. is an internationally known expert on eating disorders, obesity, and weight. He is Professor of Psychology at Yale University as well as Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health and Director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. He has served as president of several national organizations, including the Society of Behavioral Medicine, Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy, and the Division of Health Psychology for the APA. He has received numerous awards, honors, and grants for his work, has published 12 professional books and more than 200 scientific articles and chapters. He has appeared numerous times on Good Morning America, Today, 20/20, Nova, network news programs, NPR, and various documentaries. He is one of the most frequently interviewed figures in the areas of obesity, nutrition, eating disorders, and body image. He is also a parent who is very concerned about the messages our children receive about food. Katherine Battle Horgen.
