This authoritative volume offers a focused exploration of optimization approaches for the electrical contact process, ensuring consistent, reliable, and efficient performance by addressing the system’s underlying dynamics, the materials of its components, as well as critical issues such as current-carrying frictional wear, arc phenomena, and environmental impacts.
Bridging multiple disciplines, the book presents recent research findings and introduces cutting-edge technologies, laying the foundation for future advancements. Its systematic analysis and inclusion of real-world case studies contribute to an in-depth understanding of how the system operates under varying conditions, equipping readers with guidance for effective implementation.
This comprehensive book proves to be an invaluable resource for both academic learners and industry experts and fosters closer collaboration to benefit railway transport all over the world.

Zefeng Yang’s research focuses on the dynamics, arc phenomena, electrical contact, and materials for railway pantograph-catenary systems. He currently holds 18 national invention patents. He won the Ministry of Education’s First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award in 2019 and the IEEE International Standards Outstanding Contribution Award. In 2021, he became a representative of IEEE international standards (IEEE P2752, P2753, P2771), a member of the Sichuan Rail Transit High Voltage Technology Engineering Center, and a member of the Sichuan Science and Technology Youth Federation. In recent years, he has been involved in the design, research, and development of the pantograph-catenary system for the CR450 high-speed train. Wenfu Wei is a Professor at Southwest Jiaotong University, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Guest Editor for IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. He conducts applied research in high-voltage insulation, electrical contact, discharge plasma, advanced electrical materials, and artificial intelligence for automation of power systems. He is the chairman of the IEEE International Standards Working Group, a member of several domestic and foreign academic organizations, a member of the editorial board of journals (IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine, Railway Standard Design, and IEEE Transactions on Power Systems), and a member of the China Railway Group. He has published three academic monographs in Chinese and English, is also a prolific journal author, and holds 30 national invention patents. Guoqiang Gao’s primary research focuses on pantograph arcs and electric contact, as well as rail transit high-voltage and insulation technology. He won the Sichuan Outstanding Youth Fund (2018), the National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund (2019), and was selected for the Sichuan Provincial Talent Program (2020). He is a prolific author of journal papers and currently holds 26 national invention patents. He has won the First Prize of the China Railway Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Zhan Tianyou Youth Science and Technology Award. He has participated in IEEE standards development activities and the resulting research has been successfully applied to the world's first 400km/h (CIT400) high-speed inspection vehicles and high-speed test trains (500km/h). Guangning Wu, Professor has successfully presided over and undertaken a number of major scientific research projects, including 10 National Natural Science Foundation projects, among which are one Outstanding Youth Science Foundation project, 3 Key Fund projects, and more than 20 national, provincial, and ministerial scientific research projects, such as the National Key R&D Program. Prof. Wu has carried out systematic and in-depth research on advanced electrical materials for rail transit, state detection of traction power supply equipment, and overvoltage protection of traction power supply systems. He is an editorial board member for several journals, including High Voltage (Wiley), Journal of Electronic Science and Technology (Elsevier), and IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, among others, laying a solid foundation for China’s high-speed rail technology and equipment to go global.
