Introduction
Someone once compared me to a fairy, fluttering and sprinkling magical pixie dust on everything around me. Initially, I was uncertain how to interpret their remark. True to my polite ways, I smiled and nodded, responding in my gentle southern accent, “Awe, thanks so much.”
Their comment lingered in my mind, making me question whether they were teasing me or being sincere. Upon deeper reflection, I understood their intent clearly. From their perspective, I lead a life reminiscent of a fairytale, swept off my feet by a charming prince, blessed with a wonderfully cheerful son who smiles endlessly, and overall, my life seems to veer towards the positive rather than the negative. However, what remains unseen is the inner journey and effort that have brought me to this stage in my life.
I was raised in a middle-class family in a neighborhood where I was the only girl on the street. Being an only child in that environment, I quickly learned to defend myself with a tough and outspoken demeanor, warning the neighbor’s son that I would pull him off his dirt bike and beat him up if he harmed my dog. In middle school, I was the only girl on the eighth-grade football team, I played soccer, was in the school choir, and became interested in modeling and acting. Sadly, keeping busy with extracurriculars and the protective facade I had created only took me so far. I still experienced emotional scars that I kept hidden. This buried secret eventually surfaced in unexpected ways in my early twenties, but these scars didn’t stop me from daydreaming about the life I wanted.
At 15, when I got my learner’s permit, an upscale housing community was being built that I would drive past on my way to work. It was gated but remained accessible to construction workers during the day. I would drive through the neighborhood in my 1989 Plymouth Voyager van, which was rusted on top (we called it Carrot Top after the comedian), and it creaked when I would drive over speed bumps. It had no heat or air conditioning, but since my parents only paid $500 for it, what could I really expect?
Driving through this neighborhood, I fantasized about what it would be like to live in such elegant homes. One house featured a quaint vineyard in the side yard, while others displayed expansive circular driveways with magnificent fountains at their center. These mansions were truly storybook value, especially for a girl living in a mobile home.
Eventually, this became the neighborhood where Carolina Panthers players and NASCAR drivers lived. Once enough of the homes had been completed and occupied by these celebrities, the gate remained fully closed at all times. Clearly, no one was giving me or my rusty old van a code to get in.
I was too embarrassed to be seen driving my van to high school, so I drove to a friend’s house, parked there, and rode with her to school in her red Ford Probe. Then, after school, I would ride with her back to her house, change into my work clothes, and drive to Concord Mills Mall to work at one of the many kiosks in the middle.
At one time, I sold magic tricks and pranks, using my juggling skills in the mall to attract customers. Later, I transitioned to selling cell phone accessories, where I truly thrived. Earning $5 an hour plus a 5% commission on my sales, I quickly made at least $1,200 monthly. This income helped me save enough to buy a white 1988 Honda Accord Coupe, which made me feel quite accomplished. It had heat and air conditioning and was much sportier than a van, though the sunroof leaked. Nonetheless, I was proud to have purchased it entirely on my own and could afford fuel, insurance, and my monthly cell phone bill.
Throughout high school, I worked around 25 hours each week. After graduating, I secured a job at Auto Bell car wash, still aspiring for the life I envisioned. During this time, I traveled to Hollywood and met with a prospective talent agent in hopes of realizing my dream of becoming an actress, but it wasn’t in the cards.
One day at the car wash, a stylish young man pulled up in his sleek black Mercedes with shiny rims. Naturally, I seized the opportunity to upsell him on tire gloss to highlight those rims. He became a regular, and eventually, my 18-year-old self gathered the courage to ask him about his job. He told me he and his father had recently relocated from California and started their own real estate company focusing on property management.
During his next visit to the car wash, he approached me and inquired if I would like to become a leasing agent for his company. Unsure of what a leasing agent was or what the role entailed, I asked several questions. The following day, I attended the interview and was hired on the spot.
After renting single-family homes for a while, I found it difficult to manage the gas expenses for property showings along with my living expenses. Consequently, I applied for a leasing agent role at a nearby apartment community. With leasing experience now on my resume and a tenacious spirit, I was hired immediately. Although I was the youngest leasing team member, my dedication and professionalism consistently positioned me as the top producer. My determination propelled me rapidly up the corporate ladder.
At this apartment community, I met my now husband. During that time, my manager was married to my husband’s truck chief from his rookie NASCAR year. They believed we would hit it off, but I had my doubts. I had heard enough rumors about how race car drivers treated women and didn’t want to become just another story. My manager urged me to at least give it a chance since, as she put it, “He came with references.” So, I agreed to just one date.
While sitting across from him at a table at The Melting Pot, we shared fondue, laughs, and conversation. It felt like reconnecting with an old friend after many years and then picking up where we had left off. It felt comfortable and familiar, even though we had just met. As I sat across from him, I thought to myself, “he is going to be my husband.” He was just 19, and I was 21. We met on a Monday, became ‘official’ by Friday, and moved in together six weeks later.
As I progressed in my property management career in my early twenties, I began to feel significant burnout. Frequently, I was sent home early at the end of the week due to logging too much overtime. The onset of shingles was a major warning sign that I needed to make a change. My body was clearly under immense stress, even though my still-maturing mind did not fully comprehend the situation.
At that point, I chose to pursue a new path by obtaining my real estate license. The flexibility of creating my own schedule appeared less daunting and gave me a chance to attend some of my then-boyfriend’s races. This decision came in 2009, shortly after the housing market crash. Many believed I was unwise to enter the field during such a downturn. After earning my Broker’s license, I relied on my professional leasing background and joined a boutique real estate firm specializing in property management and sales. The property management aspect provided additional income in an area where I excelled while also allowing me to grasp the basics of sales and successfully close multiple deals each year.
As time passed, I established lasting relationships with my clients, leading my business to thrive through referrals. In my late twenties, as I came to own and operate my own real estate firm, I discovered a crucial aspect of myself: I was an empath. This meant I carried not only my stress and emotions but also those of my clients. While being an empath enhanced my ability to connect deeply with clients, it led to significant burnout again. Although the freedom to create my own schedule seemed less stressful at first, the absence of a steady paycheck compelled me to work far beyond the typical 9-5 hours. My work started to dominate my life. I found myself negotiating deals at midnight to meet expectations, particularly in a competitive market where timing was critical. Despite needing ample sleep, I struggled to rest as my mind always raced. It was during this time that my husband recommended I try meditation to help alleviate my stress.
After I made meditation a daily habit, I discovered my magic recipe. I began exploring energy and its impact on everyone, particularly empaths. My journey into meditation deepened alongside various spiritual and mindfulness practices. I started applying my newfound knowledge and soon saw remarkable benefits. I found myself feeling less stressed, even in challenging situations. This calmness contributed to improved sleep, and I felt more positive overall. I had truly transformed my life for the better.
I will always be thankful for Real Estate, as it was the foundation that directed me toward my true path. This journey led me to become a Medical Reiki Master, a mindfulness educator, and a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Trainer, while also earning certifications in...
