CHAPTER 2.
SUBJECT MATTER
Subjects are the steppingstones that allow stories to take us from one place to another throughout life. The world is rich and deeply resourced with endless subjects. The subject-limited never see the many islands of ideas, pools of perspectives, and myriads of understanding out there in the world waiting to be inquisitively mined.
Window Seat
I remember sitting and watching one of my sons as a little boy daily looking out of the living room window. I imagined he wondered where everyone was going and what everyone planned on doing. He watched his older brother eagerly get on a bus and head off to school and wondered. Just as I did as a child, he watched everyday people purposely going back and forth, even as the seasons changed without fail, still watching, still wondering. I believed he wondered, as I did, where in the world was everybody going without him, and what in the world was happening out there in the world without him. I wondered, as he now wonders, about the time and space that still lay between me and a world of wonder. The wondering would eventually go from the living room window to the backseat car window, from the backseat to the classroom window, and eventually from school on to the office window. Always, wondering about what else is taking place out there in the world that could and should include me.
As a child, it seemed that I wondered endlessly through young eyes curious about whatever I was seeing take place outside my Livingroom window. I had no idea of all the difficult subject matter that lay ahead in what I assumed was a world in step with perfect harmony. I would soon realize whatever was happening outside that window wasn’t without blemish, or in any way guaranteed bliss. The other side of the window contained endless discussions on countless points of view leading to every kind of action imaginable. It was a world never without a share of unsettled debate and unresolved topics. Fortunately for me and now for him, ever since I began looking out of the window thinking of all the things I could be doing, there was someone standing behind me clearly worried about all the things I would probably eventually be doing.
Outside of that window, however, was growth, change, and the certainty of me never being content within the limits of that space again. Outside of that window was the joy and pain accompanied by reasons to be either praised or blamed. Outside that window was the place where others would choose to, or not to respect me in person or name. Over time, I’d learn that it was up to me to one day deem the world outside that window just as perfect as I saw it or more difficult than I could’ve imagined. Even on the rainiest days, I’d sit through a flood of hopeful yearnings to be out and about. As I’d later find, it’s always rainy season somewhere in the world when we’re dying for something to whet our appetite. After countless years, I’d come to learn that moderation was the only measurable amount of contentment that would last on the other side of that adventurous window.
Thankfully, neither my son nor I was ever alone in wondering about what was beyond that living room window. Where others watched, wondered, and possibly worried, we watched, wondered, and anxiously sat and waited for someone or some inspiration to take us by the hand and lead us to the waiting world outside.
Required Subject
Whether we’re the subject at hand or whether another subject is at hand, there’s always some impending subject at hand. I imagine, once upon a time, as a newborn, I was the favorite subject and chief concern of my parents. As other siblings came along, I’m sure, in addition, they also became of equal importance and the newest subjects of concern. Along with that, I’m sure there were other significant subject matters they were also contending with. From one subject to the next, each moving interest along a day at a time. Today, simple subjects of what to wear and eat. Tomorrow, tougher subjects of what to trust or believe in. The more subjects, the faster the wheel of life relentlessly rolls along, ever accommodating our thirst to find a suitable subject. One that gets us a little closer to our longings and further entertains some of our desires and passions. Whether past, current, or future, there’ll be plenty of subjects to occupy us until the very end of time.
Possibilities are the aim of the best stories, and the subject matter takes aim at those possibilities. Everyone will eventually find subjects to their liking to participate in. Even at the early age of grade school, we are ceremoniously asked to choose a subject or profession we would like to pursue in the upcoming future. The hope is that we will choose one or two subjects and at least head off in that direction. Socially, culturally, politically, or businesswise, there has to be something out there that we’d love to embark on over the course of our life. In fact, the very nature of our beings revolves around the axis of subject matter. With all the attention-grabbing subject matter emerging around us, it’s certain we’ll begin and end life attached to one subject or another. Subjects that will, or have led us into whatever purpose, past time, or obsession we’ve at some point entertained, or are currently involved in.
Who knows what subject, in particular, will capture our attention and eventually consume a sizable amount of our time? I didn’t know which subjects would influence and shape how I’d come to see life. When the right subject materialized, untold possibilities were born in me and they began to grow over time. I can say, life grew even fuller with the more interest I developed. All we need sometimes is for the right subject to take root and blossom. That usually happens when an initiated subject is met with an equal desire, desire meets with the means, or the means finds its opportunity. Once any of these takes place in any order, the next new thing is en route to writing its own chapter in our life.
With endless subjects out there just waiting for participation, it’s unfortunate that there’s only so much that we can participate in within a single lifetime. Every day, something else comes along to add to the choosing and it’s left up to us to decide which to apply time to. All of us in some way will be associated with a number of matters that will saturate the pages of our endeavors. That being said, there’s nothing like having something to collectively expound on with others. Being involved in anything that empowers an in-depth passion that effectively communicates is the ultimate plus. Subjects are one of the surest ways to enter into and maintain relationships, along with being one of the best ways to expand social or professional circles. Subject matter injects a focused purpose into the stagnant or declining spaces we’re tasked to occupy. That’s why I believe those who do better in associating themselves with others always seem to be versed in their fair share of subjects. I don’t believe we have to be all-knowing, but I do believe it helps to have at least a practical number of things under our belt, preferably enjoyable, to help fuel reasonable and lasting communication.
Subject Limited
Everyone is an expert in the field of their own opinions. It’s not just the knowledgeable who feel they’re able to contribute in the absence of understanding. It’s also those with nothing more than a guess at best who are just as willing to jump right in and fill up any informational voids. Day after day, someone with a limited amount of experience somehow knows enough to interject as much as someone with years of experience from only a personal point of view. There’s little doubt that we all would like to be taken seriously in our contributions to important debate. However, the well-being of real lives should be handled with the best know-how available.
Subject matter is an open season to venture off to wherever whims and wishes escape to. There are few restrictions in choosing a subject; the qualification for the most part is, just pick the one that feels good engaging in. Every day, someone is taking on a subject in which their only real contribution is enjoyment. Different subjects meet different objectives. With all the news and information out there, it’s too inviting not to take on a subject or two just to enter into the flow of discussion. The assortment of the latest and most stimulating news or gossip keeps attention inflamed. The last subjects standing are usually able to withstand the test of time whether in debate, argument, relatable feedback, or simply the purpose of personal enjoyment.
It is comforting to know that we’re never alone on any particular subject. Whatever we’re thinking, somewhere someone else is probably thinking along those same lines. Everyone has a point of view, and more often than not, it’s a shared point of view. Subjects set the tone by placing us in the middle of different exchanges, no matter where it is in the world. Regardless of how subtle or controversial a subject is, it potentially is the catalyst that brings every impulse, concern, or emotion right into the middle of a debate. If we should find ourselves languishing within the everyday monotony, all it takes is the right subject...
