Leader of the 1970s ‘hot hatch’ pack. This is a complete, concise guide to one of the most exciting hot hatches of the 1970s.
Developed from the Sunbeam 1.6 GLS hatchback, first launched in 1977, the Sunbeam Lotus was one of the most impressive of the 1970s ‘hot hatches’. In this highly researched book, which includes new material and interviews, Sunbeam Lotus Club official historian Graeme Lawton tells the inside story of how a family hatchback was turned into a world-class rally and high-performance road car.

The book shows how the Sunbeam Lotus was developed by a Lotus team who fitted a 2.2 litre type 911 version of the Lotus 16-valve four-cylinder engine. The car was entered into Group 4 rallying against cars such as the Ford Escort RS 2000. A road-going version soon followed. The rally car immediately made its mark, winning the Lombard RAC rally in 1980 and taking the World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ title in 1981. The road version was also selected by Greater Manchester Police as a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ to chase down criminals.

Complete with tips on restoration and maintenance as well as driving, this is a complete, concise guide to one of the most exciting hot hatches of the 1970s.

Graeme Lawton has been a member of the Sunbeam Lotus Club since 1991. He was Chairman of the Club for thirteen years and is now the official Club historian. He has written several articles for the Club magazine. He has also featured on TV programmes such as Car SOS and Bangers and Cash.
