One of a series of reference works which studies the relationship of the artist to sport. This book provides an account of the historical background to flat racing, steeplechasing and point-to-point as well as an account of the artists and their paintings.
This is the second volume in a series of art reference works which studies the relationship of the artist to sport. The author, a specialist dealer in sporting paintings and a former racehorse breeder, is a leading authority on the subject. In this instance, she turns her attention to the "Sport of Kings" and looks in depth at horse racing. In this illustrated book Mary Ann Wingfield provides a detailed and readable account of the historical background to flat racing' steeple chasing and point-to-pointing before turning her attention to the artists and their paintings. Containing not just visual delights but also much entertaining anecdotal material, this book a mine of information about art and the sport itself. It is a book which should be enjoyed by the sportsman and the social historian as well as anyone with an interest in sporting paintings. Mary Ann Wingfield is a leading authority on the history of British sports and art. Between 1972 and 1982 she ran a well-known racehorse stud in Sussex.
She gave her first Sporting Art Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London in 1985 and through her own company, Wingfield Sporting Art, continues to show interesting art forms in sport to promote this subject internationally. She is also author of the companion volume Sport and the Artist - Volume 1 - Ball Games and published by the Antique Collectors' Club in 1988.
