Matthias Ostermann was a ceramicist active in the years 1974-2009, born in Germany but eventually settling in Canada. A well-travelled artist, he lectured and taught in many countries, notably Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the UK. In the 2000s he developed an interest in oriental high-fire glazes. His strong leaning towards painting and narrative work in particular came from a love of stories, myths and legends, a legacy from his mother who was a professional raconteuse.
