STAGE 1:

Living (and Sleeping)
in the Bed of Truth

Truth is easy. It is simple—it is real and completely involuntary in nature. You never have to think about speaking the truth. It just happens; it pours out of you, as it should. A lie, on the other hand, you have to create it and think of it before you speak. Now if you really think about it, well beyond the life you’ve come to know, how silly is it that the concept of lying even exists in human nature? How wrong is it that someone can actually lie to you, or vice versa? Doesn’t that very thought on a deeper level trouble you?

There is no reason for humans to lie. Unfortunately, humans created rationalized reasons to lie because they decided that the short-term perceived benefits of lying outweighed the realities of truth. Consequently, lying became a normal part of life for all humans to the point where it’s hardly questioned any more. The fact that I’m posing this question shocks you a bit because lying is a deep-rooted fact of civilized societies that goes unquestioned. Most of us don’t think of ourselves as liars because we’ve rationalized in our own minds that we’re not liars, even though we are deep down, at least to some extent.

When living in the truth every day, your life becomes the purest—genuine and simple. What do I mean by that? Truth, and living with it, has to encompass every aspect of your life. I’m not only talking about being honest, although that’s obviously important and part of it as well. I am talking about seeing the truth and the REAL in every situation. More importantly, having the ability to see it clearly without being influenced by your urge to ignore it or your sense of denial is the approach.

Truth is difficult to define, but you know it when you see it, right? The very second you see truth, you know it’s true. Even if you’re not quite sure, your inner voice of truth speaks to you. In that moment, you will either accept it, or you will defy it. It’s your choice to make in that moment. It happens so quickly, often times, that most people are not consciously aware that they’ve made a choice. If you deny the truth, it’s easy for your mind to rationalize that it wasn’t a choice. If that truth scares you, goes against your prior thought process, or reveals something about yourself you want to stay hidden, your default reaction will be to defy it and deny it. When you do that, you are now lying to yourself and living in a state of denial and defensiveness.

Imagine for a moment a modern-day world where the concept of “denial” doesn’t exist, where lying doesn’t even occur and where everyone literally speaks the truth every time. Pretend that the words “lie”, “deceit”, “denial” and all their respective synonyms are not in the dictionary, that they never were. And that they don’t exist in any other language in the world. Wouldn’t that notion alone make the world an amazing and beautiful place? Mankind would naturally and automatically care for each other more. Hatred would not exist. Most of the ills of the world would not exist. People would approach each other with love and acceptance instead of fear and hatred. Is it impossible for such a world to exist? Would you be surprised if I told you it already exists and we’re just blind to it?

If the world were to be run by children, we would have this world of truth that I’m describing. Such a world already exists for children. The minute we are born, we don’t know lying and deceit. We are born in truth, not as liars. We are born with not even an inkling of the concept of lying. It doesn’t exist in children. Children are the most honest humans we know. As they grow, they live their lives in the truth every day. Unfortunately however, there is a limit, one that was created by the world we live in. Once they’re introduced to lying (typically by adults’ poor modeling) or accidentally become aware of it, they start to lie, initially as a test. They don’t stop lying because they become aware of the fact that everyone lies around them and that it appears to be the norm. And sadly, they’re not taught not to lie. After all, children learn from and model after the adults in their lives. This norm is further perpetuated by parents and other adults who do not strongly enforce and teach their children that lying is wrong. Sadly, they give up on this most crucial teaching moment of a child’s life when a child is the most prone to learning.

Humanity, from the very beginning, has incorporated lying in its daily interaction with one another. Why is that the case? Why is that the norm, albeit an accepted norm? We all know that lying is wrong, so why is it so pervasive in our every dialogue, communication, and exchange? Lying in court is a crime, with a fancy name of perjury. Why isn’t lying in life a crime, or at least forbidden? We must ask ourselves these important questions. We must delve deep for the answers and be honest about the discussion.

The human species is the only one in the animal kingdom that uses rational thought to create an untruth. Because we have the ability to think on a critical level, humans have chosen to create the concept of lying. All other animals, outside of humans, live in their most genuine state, in which they are not in denial about who they are. They operate on both instinct and rational thought, but they do not deny who they really are to themselves; they’re not able. Animals are always living in the moment and they accept themselves for who they are, undeniably. They don’t live with false identities of themselves. They live in their most natural and purest state, free of lying, one moment to the next. Humans can do this too, but we have simply chosen not to. Why do we allow rational thought to deny who we really are? And why do some of us do so to such an extent that we are living lives behind masks, never in touch with our true selves and true identities as a result?

Frank Kafka said it perfectly when he was quoted, “I was ashamed of myself when I realized life is a costume party and I attended with my real face.” Many people unfortunately wear masks once they’ve buried their inner truths in permanent graves by their lies. The truth doesn’t care however. That’s the beauty of truth. It doesn’t care what you do with it. Every lie incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt will be paid. And you don’t get to pick when you can speak the truth again, once you’re on the insidious path of lying. Not until you have completely come clean, made full amends, and asked for forgiveness. Even then, the truth doesn’t see you the same anymore.

Why is it that children and animals are able to live in the truth every moment of their lives without any denial or equivocation about who they are, but we do not? What’s worse is that we’ve chosen to live such a life. We did this to ourselves, this unfathomable, vicious cycle of denial. We may have forgotten or not ever realized when that choice was made, but it was certainly made at some point, which then altered the course of the rest of our lives. It’s sad when you think of it in those real terms. Truth is the shortest distance from point A to B; it’s always the most direct route. A lie has no end point; it is the beginning of a long and meandering road with no navigation or GPS available. One gets so lost in it that the starting point disappears in the rear view mirror.

The great news is that truth is within our grasp and our complete control. While we cannot change the way society functions and how people treat you, we can certainly choose to control how we live our lives going forward. That choice is to live in the truth, every moment and every day, with genuine effort and intent. People will let us down. In virtually every area where there is human life, we will be let down by our friends, our family, our colleagues, elected officials, our governments, etc. Despite all this, we still have complete control of how we choose to live our lives. No one can take that away from us.

You know how when we’ve had a few drinks of alcohol, our guard drops a bit, and sprinkles of truth start exuding from our pores, our mouth, and our behavior? These are the truths that are waiting to come out when you’re not strong enough to allow them in a sober state of rational thought. Our body language always speaks the truth. Our bodies haven’t perfected the correct synchronization with our minds when we’re telling a lie. The body always indicates otherwise when the spoken word is a lie. Crying is another example of truth from body language. When you cry involuntarily, especially if you didn’t see it coming, you are living in the truth at that very moment. Isn’t that how babies communicate their truth of their moment to us? You have to listen to these truths and you have to be brave enough to take the necessary control of your life to start making changes from the truths revealed to you.

There is another important perspective of truth that serves as a constant reminder that it is ever-present in our lives. Art is truth. Art is borne of and resides in truth, since the beginning of time. Every single representation of art in human form, such as music, books, paintings, plays, movies, comedians, architecture, sculptures, comedy, tragedy, etc., has its origins in truth. Art does not lie. It exists to exemplify, amplify and expose the truth. Even when art has an ironic twist of a lie in it, that lie’s only purpose is to bravely expose the truth of the matter. Every artist conveys a snapshot of truth in life as a permanent living representation of truth. In fact, since the beginning of time, artists have been persecuted, vilified and...
