Family and social history account of Romany William Smith
William describes his life from childhood hop picking to the present. He shows how his Ames/Hames family – so little known amongst Romany families – originated with an Irish and Romany union in the early 19thC and how since they have linked with several Smith lines and with the Booths, often using Smith and Booth as alternative names. In the process, he shows how some of the Smiths were descended from the famous Black Patch’s Woodfine Smith (1780-1867) and his wife Sarah Boswell. We meet several characters, including the story teller Len Holland, Grandma Spicella, the Matchetts, beliefs, traditions, philosophy, the Woodwards and Sherriffs. Names index.
