My name is Dr. Sabine Henning-Helbig and I was born 1962 in Hamburg. As an agricultural engineer, I worked internationally for many years in a wide variety of professions. Among these are researcher, event manager, author, speaker, teacher, lecturer and freelance consultant in Africa, Europe and the US. After raising my sons, my working world became too small for me and I set out for new shores. That's when I discovered my passion for astrology. For 5 years now I have been learning and practicing as an astrologer reading my own and other people's birth charts. My versatile professional life helps a lot to meet with people from all over the world. My life coaching is about self-knowledge and personal development, and also more specifically, the professional and career path as well as the mission in life that we all got at birth. In this book you will read about the structure of a birth chart and how it can be read and interpreted. It is an introduction for birth chart readings as I practice it. 3. Twelve Archetypes in the Zodiac

In the following, the individual signs of the zodiac, the so-called archetypes, are dealt with. They are coming in the order, as they are traditionally arranged in the zodiac - beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces (see Fig. 1).

This traditional zodiac not only describes the individual signs of the zodiac in their original energy and meaning, but at the same time represents the history of human development. Personally, I am very inclined about this derivation of human development from the zodiac, because it contains many valuable explanations about our origin and our existence on planet earth. It can also apply to the Hero’s journey.

The archetypes go back to Greek mythology and also to psychology according to C. G. Jung and contain a lot of references to philosophical, metaphysical and spiritual themes.

Author's note: The symbols of each sign of the zodiac are drawn in the colour of their element (red = fire; green = earth; orange = air and blue = water).

3.1 ARIES 

Here we meet the beginning of everything that lives on earth. It is pure (life) energy. It is also called the fire of life that meets us in Aries. It is strong, powerful, hot-tempered and impulsive. It's really not for the faint-hearted, because this energy finds its channel and breaks through without pardon. Aries energy gets us fired up to be active. We take risks to get what we want. A "no" is not taken as an answer when it comes to our very own desire. It is our will to (sur)vive.

Although so fulminant, it may be surprising that an Aries energy cannot act on its own. The Aries always needs an occasion or trigger to become active. He is extremely reactive and acts "from the gut" when addressed. Without stimulation they cannot be active. So, the principle applies - all or nothing. It is like waiting for the starting gun, you could say. Its inner flame must be ignited from the outside.

This sign lives from being. The present is all that counts. - The moment brings the solution. Before and after is nothingness. And so, they can also bumble along lethargically without incentive. But this does not leave an Aries cold, on the contrary: They suffer and will even feel physical pain. They are the warrior in the zodiac, who want to assert themselves and show strength. This impulsive energy is initially pointless - that is, it is not directed towards any external goal. This makes sense when you consider how easily ignitable it actually is.

A little anecdote to better understand the Aries energy:

Imagine you were in a plane crash in a jungle or wasteland far away from civilisation. In such an exceptional situation, this Aries energy is the best thing that can happen to you. An Aries will activate all its survival energy to come out of this hopeless situation as a winner - that is, to survive! It is highly fired up! Everyone in the group of stranded people benefits equally from this, because the Aries' leadership qualities are now at their peak. An Aries will not rest until it has found a way out of the situation. In doing so, they are inventive, strategic, bold and very courageous.

This will to survive is within us, for we all have Aries energy. First it is the Ascendant (AC) and the 1st house. Somewhere the planet Mars and the sign Aries are located in the natal chart. If the Mars energies flow smoothly - that is, if they are well placed and aspected, we can get our way more easily. If the energies are obstructed for any reason, we sink into gloom, negative ideas or lapse into another kind of surrender, which in any case does not help us. The goal-oriented, positive Aries with a warlike will to survive saves himself and all his comrades-in-arms at the forefront of the zodiac.

3.2 TAURUS 

The next level in the zodiac (and transferring in human development) is the bullish energy. It is mass - in other words - matter in its purest form. From the igniting, directionless energy of Aries, matter now comes into play, which naturally adds a form. This form is solid, immobile and stable.

Transferring this to human existence, one becomes sedentary (from nomadism to the settlers). One becomes aware of one's possessions. Boundaries are drawn to occupy and secure one's place and possessions. Essential things that ensure survival are obtained and maintained. These are food, water, a roof over one's head and belonging to the family. The clan ensures survival and is defended. Our territory is appropriated, marked and delimited. "This is mine," says a Taurus.

A slowly steady walking is adhered to with conservative viewpoints: Only what proves itself remains. It is self-contained energy that works unerringly in order to achieve the goal. Trust is developed in the old traditions and customs as well as in nature. You believe what you see. Goals are near and attainable without haste and dreaming. No one can distract or influence this energy, for Taurus is also very static and stubborn in its nature. As a rock in the surf of life, a Taurus stands by your side, gives security, loves through care and protection. The joy of possession, of steady moves, of taking care of your belongings, of implementing and creating something that you know will last.

It is easy to imagine this energy because everyone has the experience of being born into a family, a clan or a tribe. These people now belong to me. The energy can also manifest itself in the desire to possess, in the joy of material things like food and a nice home. Building something of value is the drive to become active. However, this activity is not hectic or fiery, because Taurus is connected to the earth, to the territory, to the living beings in the world that need protection. So, Taurus also nurture themself, frugal like a buffalo, content with what he has.

We encounter this energy in the natal chart in the sign Taurus, the Taurus flavored Venus and the 2nd house. Well aspected, we strive for togetherness, possessions and enjoyment of life in a very physical way.

In an unfavourable version, however, there is the danger of excessive phlegmatism, hedonism, clinging to the old, lack of flexibility, stubbornness; or the opposite: eating disorders, imbalance between giving and taking, gluttony and gambling addiction as well as ownership claims can become life-determining.

3.3 GEMINI 

Here, as if following a law of nature, a bright, lively energy in Gemini follows on its heels, which seems like a wake-up call to us. "Move, explore your surroundings, orient yourself beyond your limits, be curious!" says Gemini.

This Gemini energy can be felt both physically and mentally. New things are to be learned, tried out and explored, otherwise one feels at a standstill. This is not pleasant for a Gemini, because constant movement is in their veins. They are literally interested in everything but standing still, because that means boredom. The energy knows how to make (new) contacts, expand its circle of acquaintances and generally learn something new.

Ask a Gemini to do something spontaneously. It is pretty sure they will agree enthusiastically. They are mentally so flexible that the best solutions come to them under some kind of pressure or stress. The Gemini embodies Mercury or Hermes, the Greek messenger of the gods.

On the other hand, Gemini energy risks to scatter. Then they tend to be vague and indecisive. There are simply too many interesting options that feel tempting. When the new has been inspected, recognized and learned - well, what next? Move on to the next "hot spot"? Probably yes! Thus, a mental nomadism can be observed, whereby a deeper meaning of what has been learned does not necessarily want to be explored.

Find the joy in variability is the trump card. A Gemini is probably already funny, carefree and active, but seriousness and reliability are lacking and make it difficult for them to be a good partner and friend in the long run. They love this superficiality, whereas a certain depth and closeness cannot be achieved so easily.

How these vivid energies of Gemini show up in our birth chart depends on the ruler planet Mercury, the sign of Gemini and house number 3. A good Mercury learns quickly and can pass on the information gained well. This is when it works perfect in the mind. In the opposite case, this mental ability can be blocked or overstrained and be experienced as nervous, restless and erratic. In this case, it will be difficult to bring focus to the thoughts, which can naturally produce nervousness, insomnia and other mental and physical disturbances. It is advisable to counteract this with consciousness exercises, meditation and similar mindful techniques.

3.4 CANCER 

If we briefly recapitulate, the spark of life in Aries has become matter in Taurus. An orientation in space is added in Gemini.

Now we leave the first quadrant, which is expressed in physicality and the feeling type with its three archetypes Aries, Taurus and Gemini.

We enter the 2nd quadrant in the Zodiac circle. Here the energy changes and deals with the development of the soul. "Humans do not live by bread alone." (5th Book of Moses, the Gospel according to Matthew). This is about our mind and the personal identification. How significant that at the beginning of the 2nd quadrant we meet Cancer with its lunar energy. This sign symbolises the natural mother in the zodiac, because Cancer embodies everything that nurtures, cares with the heart and led through emotions.
