Introduction

First off let me say that I wrote this book to help convicts or ex-convicts who really want to change. Also, this book is for anyone that would like to truly help rehabilitate an offender such as correctional officers, counselors, caseworkers, probation officers, therapists, educators, or anyone in law enforcement. Well let me be clear the vast majority of the people I just listed really are just there to collect a paycheck. That being said however, I know there are some of you out there that really do care and want to make a difference not only at your job but in your community.

I think no matter what side of the fence you are on; we all can get discouraged at times some of us forget the real reason we decided to get in the field that we are in. A lot of us become callous overtime and forget what our purpose in life really is. It's like the lawyer that decided he wanted to get into law to help people. But later he has so much student loan debt that he can only help those who have money. Also, it is easy for convicts or ex-convicts to continue the vicious cycle of self-destruction and get caught in the trap and become institutionalized.

Please understand this is a book written by an ex-convict for convicts and the ex-convict or anyone who truly wants to help us. Keep that in mind when you read this book. Now to go over some of my qualifications and the only way that I can do this is by telling you the bad as well as the good. Keep that in mind and I don't enjoy going over the bad since it isn't nothing to glamorize and never really helps you in life other than learning things the hard way. However, in this instance it does only for the mere fact to relate to the people this book was intended to help.

Now I've been in almost every kind of court there is criminal court, civil court, small claims court, traffic ticket court, and the list goes on. I've been to juvie hall, the county jail, receiving, work release, minimum camps, medium institutions, and close custody which is the penitentiary. Also, I got infractions while I was in there too. I got several minor infractions a few major infractions mostly for fighting. I've done programs in the hole also known as segregation or intensive management unit, as a result of disciplinary action for fighting and not following the rules while I was incarcerated. From 1994 to 2004 I was in and out of the system several times. Three separate times I was sent to prison. For three separate convictions.

The first time I went to prison I was charged as an adult; I was only 17 years old. There was an issue of self-defense, but I wasn't supposed to have a gun. I pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon. The second time I played guilty to residential burglary and possession of stolen firearms. It just happened to be a police officer's house, but I didn't know that at the time. The third time I was just racking up points by then, so I went to prison again for another assault.

Which normally, that wouldn't have carried so much time but since I had so many points, they sent me to prison a third time. Normally, it would have just been counting time but not for me because I was becoming a career criminal at least in their eyes. I had a judge tell me once that “If I see you again, I'm going to give you an enhanced sentence.” Luckily, he didn't and this 10-year period, I did about eight years of it incarcerated which I consider to be a waste of time and my life. Sure, I did try to make the best of it by taking my experiences and sharing them with others in hopes that they would not make the same mistakes as I did. Also of course the obvious writing this book to show you guys that if I can do it, you can do it.

So now that I have gone over my misfortunes with the system. Let's talk about the good things that I did once I got out of the trap. So, I worked many regular jobs as well as invested in creating my own business. One thing that helped me was staying busy. For me it's a good thing but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will work for you, because everyone's different but I will get to this later in the book, going over the master formula to keep people out of trouble and out of the trap. As you probably read in about the author, I do music and have been fairly successful in my genre of music.

Many people know who I am especially the ones that listen to Chicano Rap. However, I am not rich by any means part of the reason is because I accrued a lot of debt from my convictions what everyone knows is restitution. To give you an idea of just how much debt I accrued it is comparable to the student loan debt of a doctor or a lawyer out of medical school or law school. The difference is they earned an education degree and I earned a big hurdle to overcome.

Also, I have been involved with many different churches in the community and I have participated in many fundraisers for different charities. At one of my concerts, we had part of the proceeds go to the Vanessa Behan crisis nursery. Also, one time I was requested to visit a sick child that was recovering in the Shriners Hospital. I enjoyed the visit and putting the smile on a child's face that was going through a difficult time. I remember that he wanted a poster and his parents put it up in his room. It's simple things like that which don't seem like much to some people but to other people it's a big deal.

It may surprise some of you who are familiar with my music, but I enjoy giving back to the community and helping people. I have had many young fans talk to me about their involvement with gangs at events and signings.

I see how they glamorize it and I made sure to tell them their best chance to make it is to stay in school. I have always been very forward with people and explain to them that I'm not here because of my mistakes that I made. I'm here because I've decided to turn my life around and become a productive member of society.

So how did I do it? How did I make it? Well, it sure wasn't because of anything that they taught me. Now before I get into speaking too harshly about different classes that the Department of Corrections makes you take, or your probation officer makes you take or classes that the judge sentenced you to take. Let me just say that some of those classes can be helpful and are helpful to certain people. However, those classes can't and won't help everyone. To give you an example, I took anger management four times. I only finished the class three times. The last time I was unable to complete the class because I went to the hole for fighting. Now anger management does help some people and it does have its benefits but just not for me.

The anger management class that is taught whether it's in an institution or outside does not go into depth at all, unless they've changed it since I took it. But I seriously doubt that they have. So, I'm just going to pick on that class for example but I'm sure it has helped some people, especially those who only have minor anger problems. But for me it didn't work that's why I had to figure out what would work for me. But that is the problem when we try to give everyone the same cure, even though not everyone has the same problems or conditions.

Now I'm going to go into this some more details about anger which was my number one problem with me getting into trouble. I think this is good to talk about because for me it was and still is my main addiction. The best thing to do is to try to take it one day at a time.

So, I'm a little bit different than the majority but that doesn't mean I can't fall into the same trap of institutionalization. The vast majority of people that find themselves incarcerated have a problem with addiction. In some cases, it might be one substance for some it might be many substances including alcohol.

Now in the book Alcoholics Anonymous, which is still considered to be one of the best written books in psychology. It talks about how there are only four true types of addiction. These are alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction, and eating disorders. It also talks about how any other problems you might have are considered to be defects of character and not true addictions. I however would have to strongly disagree.

You see I never suffered from drug addiction or alcoholism or any of the four true addictions. I suffered from an addiction to anger. Now before we get too far, I don't want you to think this guy thinks he's better than me or he's just not telling the whole truth because he wants to sound good in his book. Well, it's the truth and of course I have drank alcohol and been drunk before and even socially drink occasionally. But I have never suffered from alcoholism ever or drug addiction.

Even according to the book Alcoholics Anonymous it states that there are three types of Alcoholics: moderate alcoholics, excessive alcoholics, and true alcoholics, which I have never suffered from or have ever been. Now you might think he must have been a drug addict, or he used to use. But I have not, sure I might have smoked a few blunts or joints in my time filled with cannabis. But it was the same as alcohol once in a great while or socially. Also, I have never used any drug in my life other than what the doctor prescribed me when I was sick, and the social use of cannabis from time to time. Also, I think it's important to add to let you know how concrete the facts are that I have never been an alcoholic or drug addict.

I was never arrested in my life while under the influence of alcohol or cannabis. That's right I was completely sober, and I was completely sober every time I committed a crime. It just goes to show you how my theory of anger being an addiction could very well be true.
