John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder (1743–1823) was a Moravian missionary, linguist, and historian known for his extensive work among Native American peoples in the Ohio Country. Heckewelder was sent to America under the auspices of the Moravian Church and devoted his life to missionary work. His dedication to learning the languages and cultures of the Native American tribes, particularly the Delaware (Lenni Lenape), earned him great respect and influenced his seminal work, 'History, Manners and Customs of the Indian Nations' (1819).
