CHAPTER 1
The Body-Mind Link
As is the human body, so is the cosmic body As is the human mind, so is the cosmic mind As is the microcosm, so is the macrocosm As is the atom, so is the Universe.
The Upanishads
What is the “body-mind” link?
This is how the body speaks its mind through actions, illness and pleasure. This link is like an everyday news update on your progress in life. Like dreams, your body reveals unconscious or conscious problems and desires.
How can it benefit me?
This is how the body speaks its mind through actions, illness and pleasure. This link is like an everyday news update on your progress in life. Like dreams, your body reveals unconscious or conscious ' problems and desires.
How do I start?
Look in the mirror. Observe your posture, shape, and the parts of you that you love and hate.
If we think about our bodies at all, we may feel that they are just physical vehicles that keep us glued to the face of the earth, full of appetites and desires that continually need resisting or fulfilling. Some of us may be conditioned to believe that we should deny our fleshy container, keep our eyes focused on heaven, and identify the boy as the source of pain and suffering rather than joy and delight.
Yet the body is our greatest ally on the path of spiritual growth, because it lives in the moment, in the “now.” It gives you valuable feedback on if you are acting according to your soul purpose. It informs you on your negative, destructive thoughts, and shows you where you are storing unexpressed feelings. It is your vehicle for crossing from the level of physical reality to the expanded, conscious awareness of who you really are.
This earthly body of ours contains a space-time travel vehicle, a magic child, a barometer, a compass, a pharmacy complete with pharmacist, and a library full of archives.
Your body as a car
Stop for a moment, and imagine that if your body was a car, what might it look like? Write it down, or draw it, in a journal. Then write, or draw it, as you would like it to be.
What do you know about your car? Do you just jump in and hope it will get you from A to B as quickly as possible, or do you know and understand what goes on under the bonnet? Obviously, it needs gas, or you won’t be going anywhere. What kind of fuel do you fill yourself up with? Do you pay attention to the little knocks and rattles, or hope that they will sort themselves out? Many people ignore the rising needle on the temperature gauge until steam gushes out of the bonnet and the car comes to a grinding halt. Maintenance work is only carried out because of a looming service. However, the attitude and awareness of you, the driver, is essential for the smooth running and overall performance of your body, or car. Of course, this earthly body of yours is infinitely more than just a car—it contains a space-time travel vehicle, a magic child, a barometer, a compass, a pharmacy complete with pharmacist, and a library full of archives. It is a universe and also an atom within that universe; it is a miracle, and without it, we would not feel a thing.
A new you in seven years
Let us take a closer look at this miracle that we take so much for granted. Perhaps the most important point to understand is that the body has its own consciousness—it has a mind of its own, it hears every word you say, or rather feels, every thought you think—and translates those thoughts into reality. It metabolizes your thoughts in the same way that it metabolizes a tomato sandwich. There are over 50 trillion cells in your body and each one has over 3 million different ways of communicating; another information superhighway. Life and death at the cellular level are the same as night and day to us. Each cell is replicated by a new cell stored with the identical information of the deceased, so a scar continues to be a scar, even though the wound was experienced long ago.
Our bodies have an inner pharmacy and pharmacist that goes about his business without our conscious knowledge. Hair just keeps on growing, baked potatoes get digested, and every cell gets replaced when it has reached its sell-by date. The "you" that is reading this will be totally different from top to bottom, head to toe, skin to bone-cells, in the space of seven years. There will not be one cell that is the same as it is at this moment.
Medical science is finally beginning to acknowledge the interconnection between what happens in our bodies, and what goes on in our heads. As technology advances, illness created by the interaction between our minds and bodies will become a provable fact, rather than being labeled as psychosomatic. It will become possible to detect the tumor in the auric field before it becomes a physical reality. This new science has the elaborate title of psychoneuroimmunology, or PNI.
Soul work is about understanding who you are and expressing your true self. When this happens, there is balance between what you feel inside and how you live externally.
Our communicating hemispheres
To understand what our bodies try to tell us, it is first important to know that although we might assume that we think with a single mind, this is not the case. We have twin "travelers" living beside one another in our cranium— the left and right hemispheres of our brain— and they each have very different functions, and very different ways of experiencing, translating, and storing information about the world. Usually, one of the two hemispheres is dominant, and in our current society we have been encouraged to use and trust the processes of our left brain. But our left and right brains need to get together and work in harmony, so that life is experienced from a point of balance.
Imagine that you are about to do a jigsaw. The right brain holds the picture on the lid of the box, while the left brain sorts the pieces out and works out what bits go where. Obviously you need both of these two sides of the brain working together in order to complete the puzzle.
The two sides of the brain and how they work
The Left Hemisphere
| Masculine | Proof through Logic |
| Active | Sequential | Classifies | Judges |
| Detail | Rational | Labels | Time-conscious |
| Factual | Outward | Enjoys puzzles and word games |
| Verbal | Analytical | Looks at cause and effect |

| QUALITIES | DAY, FIRE, HEAVEN, SUN, YANG |
The Right Hemisphere
| Feminine | Proof through Experience |
| Passive | Inward | Fantasy Color |
| Feeling | Creative | Form and movement |
| Receptive | Intuitive | Sees the whole picture |

Unfortunately, we do not usually allow these partners to collaborate on making sense of the puzzle that is life, and we value the functions of one side more than the other. Perhaps we have become overly concerned with sorting out which bit goes where without holding the overall vision of our life. Or, we may live in the clouds and be totally out of touch with the practicalities that have to be dealt with. We are so involved with the dream that we forget that bills have to be paid and the doors have to be locked. Listing the different functions of the left and right brain may give you an idea of which side of your brain you use predominantly.
Both of these twin travelers think and reason, but they do operate in very different ways, and it is obvious which one of these we are educated and encouraged to use predominantly. But we need the attributes of both of them to live in balance in this physical, material world.
Body language
To understand anyone, we need to be able to communicate. Body language is a term often used these days, but what does it mean? How do our bodies speak to us? Do we need a dictionary or glossary of terms? No, but you do need to recognize that the body works closely with the unconscious mind, and the language of the unconscious mind is image and metaphor. You will probably not be able to access the body’s messages and information through verbal language—it uses a different tongue. The right hemisphere of your brain, your right mind, will be your translator.
One of the ways in which the body speaks its mind is through posture. When a person is depressed, the body becomes lethargic.
One of the ways in which the body speaks its mind is through posture. When a person is depressed, the body becomes lethargic, wanting to slump and hide. On the other hand, it is easy to identify people who feel on top of the world. Their whole body looks as though it feels good to be alive—life is an exciting challenge, an adventure, a discovery. When the body feels that it needs to protect itself, it will automatically cross its arms (protecting the Solar Plexus chakra, the center...
