All the information you need to plan and plant a garden entirely suited to your climate and situation. Plant selection step by step; Planting design and care; 24 different palettes for specific purposes and situations. A directory with descriptions of over 440 plants.

Marijke Honig studied Botany at the University of Cape Town, worked at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, and has been designing and planting indigenous landscapes since 2000. She has a profound love for South Africa’s flora, its colours, textures and scents, as well as its exceptional diversity. Marijke combines her knowledge of plants and local plant ecology with a love for design, creating natural-styled biodiverse landscapes. She thinks and designs with what she calls ‘plant palettes’ – groups of plants that serve a specific purpose, such as screening, or that work for a particular habitat. Career highlights include the Biodiversity Showcase Garden in Green Point Urban Park, Cape Town, which features educational displays and some of the extraordinary biodiversity found in the Cape; landscaping the High Constantia Estate, where diverse habitats support an abundance of wildlife; and an American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2010 award-winning residential garden. She enjoys sharing her knowledge in talks and articles, exploring themes such as resilience, and regenerative practices in landscaping.
